From the 1995 live album 'An Evening with the Allman Brothers: 2nd Set', this is the only acoustic arrangement of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" ever released. A special nod to the late Allen Woody for his acoustic bass solo on this song.

R. I. P. Mr. Betts today truly hurts on so many levels

1981 a 14 year old N.Y.State girl first heard The Allman Brothers Band and fell in love with soulful, intricate, hard rocking, gut wrenching, and sometimes even joyful sounds I heard. Dickie's songs became parts of my everyday life in literal ways. My Dad, a wonderful Tenor, 40 years my senior complained, as Dad's do, about "that music you kids listen to, it's all so loud and obnoxious." So choosing carefully, I played the lovely "Blue Sky" for him. Of course he took back his admonishment. After all how could a song I would sing to birds who fluttered away while I was walking from the bus stop couldn't be "obnoxious" (Don't fly mister bluebird, I'm just walkin' down the down) In college while scrubbing pots in a pizza joint, a coworker asked me, "Are you whistling Jessica?" "No" I said my name is "Sybil" without thinking. Jessica/Jesse, became my nickname because of that encounter. Such a beautiful uplifting song, that could make my mood soar from low to high, just like Dickie's guitar. Years later as my Dad lie dying, I sang to him as he had done for me my whole life. "Blue Sky" was one of those songs. He said to the hospise nurse, "That's my daughter. Doesn't she have a beautiful voice?" Those were his last words. I decided a long time ago "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" will be played at my funeral, as it is one of the most beautifully composed songs ever. The symphony of Southern Rock. The closest I got to Dickie was watching him play. Yet he gave me a lifetime of joy 💞

Heard Dickey Betts died and it took me on a journey to here. Never met the man but he taught me to play the guitar. I spent weeks with this song on the Filmore album, moving the needle back until I mastered every note. His style was so melodic, beautiful and unique. I probably won't be around much longer but when my life flashes in front of my eyes I hope In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is the soundtrack.

I think this one is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Thanks To Mr. Richard Betts for his contributions to American Rock and Roll, and without him ABB would not have been what they became...

Such a beautiful song. First time since it first came out when I was a teenager that I ever heard it as an acoustic jam..

Thanks to whomever posted this...

I believe it was ’94. I was at a long and empty bar in a hotel near Canal Street in Richmond. It could have been the Omni and I would look it up if it meant more to this story, but it really doesn’t. I’d just sat down and was thinking about my meeting the next day with a young, up-and-coming programmer, Aaron, at a radio station so, I was taking it easy with a beer. The long drive down from D.C. had me beat. It was just me, French fries, a beer, and the bartender pretending to be interested with what was on the TV when this guy comes in and sits in the stool right next to mine. He was wearing beat-up jeans with a beautiful buckle and a weathered cowpoke tightly weaved straw hat with a narrow brim. He gave us the old, “How y’all doing?” and conversation began. It is embarrassing to say now, especially since I am a huge fan of his guitar work and his band, but I didn’t recognize him. He began talking the reason he was in Richmond; his daughter’s cotillion. He said some of his band mates had come down, too. When I asked the name of his band and he told me, well the rest of the night was my babbling about guitarists, influences, musicians in our families, our collective love for The Blues, the advent of “Southern Rock, ” and my love for his band’s music. I told him that because I once interned and later worked at Epic Records, I had seen them many, many times at The Beacon. I wanted to talk about so many other things but the writer of “Rambling Man” and “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” just wanted to talk about how proud he was of his daughter. Rest in Sonic Slumber, Forrest Richard “Dickie” Betts.

I live for unplugged classic Rock - This version of this song sent me over the top for a long...long...time. I used to play it in the car for my kids when they were little. They used to listen to the polyphony of instrumental voices and tell me the players were "out of tune"..."No Peter...It is just part of what makes the music so great". Let me say right here and right now - This is a masterpiece. Dicky is part of this recording which is great. Dicky Betts was and is still awesome. So he and the band went separate ways...it happens. Doesn't change the fact that this recording is so...so..so...great. Gregg - Dude - I miss you so much.

The very best from the Alman Bros band acoustical for sure. Many songs are awesome just like the Grateful Dead! "Nobody Knows" is probably the best song ever played and performed- the lyrics are mind blowing!!

This is a little touch of that divine gift that these truly great musicians all are gifted with. This is an awesome song to play too, so free to play as you like till you've said what needs to be said, throw the tag, pass it on to the next player.
Where words leave off, is where music starts. This is a real conversation of true art.

Absolutely incredible music, have loved this for years. You really need to listen to the bass. It’s what actually makes this track rock.
