Utah, Nevada Towns Hit With 'Tumblemageddon'

Several Utah and Nevada towns were inundated by tumbleweeds that blocked roads and buried houses following strong winds, in what some are dubbing 'tumblemageddon.'

Severe weather in the western U.S. brought winds of more than 60 mph which downed trees and powerlines, damaged infrastructure, and resulted in road closures. It also brought thousands of tumbleweeds, which, in some places, piled as high as 10 feet.

‘Luckily, it’s something we can handle,’ Rachel Van Cleave, the communications manager of South Jordan, Utah, told local station KSL-TV. ‘This is not our first tumblemageddon.'

South Jordan residents sprang into action following the tumbleweed takeover, cleaning up the prickly plant before city workers ultimately arrived with garbage trucks.

Another resident told the local station that he woke up to find his porch completely covered in tumbleweeds. ‘There’s nothing to do but laugh,’ he added.

I once had a foreign tourist ask me if Tumbleweeds stop at puddles to get water. I just told him yes, if their are no lakes, ponds, or rivers around they will roll around until they find a puddle.

The amount of spaghetti western music that the entire tumbleweed tsunami carries with must be deafening

In case you didn’t know, tumbleweeds have thorns. Basically a rolling thorn bush

Grew up in rural Texas plains on a cotton farm. When tumble weeds gather along a barbed wire fence next to railroad tracks, sparks from ‘hot boxes’ (train wheel main bearing wearing out, overheating) can easily ignite tumbleweeds. Combined with panhandle wind storms= rolling blowing fire balls.

My Grandma bear grew up in the "Dust Bowl" in Texas during the depression. She would tell me about the tumbleweed fireballs that would roll across the fields causing huge fires on fence lines. The tumbleweed would catch fire due to the static electricity built up from the sand blowing like rubbing a balloon on your shirt or carpet for a spark and catch them on fire

Driving through Nevada years ago, I thought the tumbleweeds were bad enough. This made that trip look like a walk in the park.

Someone should put up a “no smoking, tumbleweeds x-ing” sign.

My family moved from Massachusetts to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our whole back yard, an acre, was overgrown with tumbleweeds. They were over a whopping 7 ft. tall. They were easy to clean up. They burned like paper. My father then made a beautiful vegetable garden. All his vegetables were HUGE! The front yard was pure dry sand. He put in a sprinkler system and grew the healthiest lawn, pine trees, and rose bushes. Everyone else had sand for a front yard. RIP Daddy & Momma <3

The stems on those are no joke. Years ago, one took out the headlight on my Dads 4-Runner. He was doing about 40 mph, hit the brakes when he realized it he was going to hit it. As it stopped rolling briefly across the road. Probably hit it at about 20mph. Stem side right through the lense and reflector.

Holy smokes . I've never seen it that bad. Can you imagine if someone starts a fire. Fireballs rolling down the street at 20 mph.
