Actual true story in New York, parents kept their children in a locked away apartment for years

Someone_Unknown

A controlling, manipulative father (Christos Stergioglou) locks his three adult offspring in a state of perpetual childhood by keeping them prisoner within the sprawling family compound. The children are bored to tears in spite of distractions like Christina (Anna Kalaitzidou), an employee of their father's who makes regular visits to service the son (Hristos Passalis). Increasingly curious about the outside world, the older daughter (Aggeliki Papoulia) hatches a plan to escape.

Ok so "Dogtooth” is a bizarre fantasy that takes the concept of home schooling to squirmy extremes. Some home schoolers try to limit what their children can learn, and others attempt to broaden it. The parents in “Dogtooth” have passed far beyond such categories, into the realms of home psychopathology. basically No name is given for the family or any of its members. These involve a father, a mother, a brother and two sisters. They live in a large, affluent home behind a very high wall and a gate, which is always locked. Only the father ever leaves, driving to the factory he owns.

This is... An odd one. Yorgos Lanthimos at his weirdest.

Here's the plot (this is brimming with spoilers, so beware!):

The film opens with three siblings (all in their late teens to early twenties) in a bathroom, listening to a cassette tape. The tape contains the words they are bound to learn that day: sea, motorway, excursion and carbine. The given definitions of all four words seem to be totally irrelevant to their real meaning. After it's finished, one of them suggests playing an endurance game involving keeping their fingers in hot water as much as they can.

Meanwhile, the father brings Christina, a female security guard he knows from work, to the house and pays her to engage in sexual intercourse with his son. The whole process feels totally forced and robotic. After they're done, he drives her back. She's blindfolded during the trips so she won't know the location of the house.

The routine of the house gets clearer as the fikn depicts their everyday life. The children have absolutely no contact with the outside world, as their parents have made them believe they cannot step outside the main gate unless they "lose a dogtooth". To pass time they help with the chores, play all kinds of endurance games and watch video recordings of themselves. Good behaviour is awarded with stickers, while bad behaviour is punished with physical and verbal abuse. They also believe they have a brother on the other side of the fence who tried to leave before he was ready, with whom they try to communicate regularly. Only the father is allowed to leave (and only by car) to go to his work as the manager of a factory.

Christina continues coming to the house but gets frustrated when the son can't sexually satisfy her, so she secretly resorts to the elder daughter for sexual favours in exchange for small gifts, like a hairband. Influenced by these experiences, the daughter gets starts asking the same from her sister. They both seem to enjoy this newfound activity, and begin doing it even when they don't have anything to trade.

One day, a stray cat gets in the garden while the father is away. Everyone is terrified until the son manages to sneak up from behind and kill it. The father comes back with his shirt covered in fake blood, informing the family about how cats are extremely dangerous because they eat human flesh (especially children) and tells them that their brother on the other side of the fence was murdered by it. A ceremony is held for the "dead" brother.

The mother tells her husband that she's pregnant with twins. The children are not happy because they will have to share their bedrooms. The father says maybe they'll reconsider having the kids if they start behaving better.

One day, the elder daughter convinces Christina to give her the two Hollywood movie tapes in her bag, promising to return them the next time she comes. After watching them, the daughter starts reenacting scenes and quoting dialogue from the movies constantly. When the father discovers the films, he beats her with one of the tapes. Then he goes to Christina's apartment and hits her in the head with the VCR, cursing her future children to "have bad influences and develop a bad personality".

Since Christina will not be around anymore, the parents decide to let the son choose one of his sisters to become his new sexual partner. After fondling both sisters with his eyes closed, he chooses the elder. She is extremely uncomfortable during the encounter and starts quoting threatening dialogue from the movie to her brother when they are lying in bed.

When the family is having a celebration for the wedding anniversary of the parents, they get the sisters to perform a short dance routine while the son plays the guitar. The younger gets tired and sits down, but the elder starts dancing the choreography from the movie Flashdance and seems to really enjoy it, until she is interrupted by the mother, who seems very concerned.

The elder daughter goes to the bathroom with a dumbbell and knocks out one of her dogteeth. She then sneaks outside and hides in the car's trunk. The father discovers the blood and the tooth and starts looking for her outside the house. Unaware that the father stepped outside the compound on foot, violating the rules he made up, the other family members get incredibly desperate when he can't find her.

The next day, the father goes to work and leaves the car unattended in front of the factory. The frame focuses on the car's trunk, but it does not open.

PARAGRAPH GIRL HERE :)

Explanation:
Dogtooth” is a bizarre fantasy that takes the concept of home schooling to squirmy extremes. Some home schoolers try to limit what their children can learn, and others attempt to broaden it. The parents in “Dogtooth” have passed far beyond such categories, into the realms of home psychopathology.

The point of Dogtooth:
Olsen saw Dogtooth's substance as "part enigma, part allegory and even part sci-fi in its creation of a completely alternate reality." Ebert found a "message" in the film, which he put as: "God help children whose parents insanely demand unquestioning obedience to their deranged standards....

IT kinda sounds similar to a true real case i watched where one of the daughters tried to escape and called 911. Where there parents finnally got arrested. I remember the girl was bout 19 and she didn't even know basic knowledge above 4th grade. I remembered she was so puzzeled to hear the word "medications". She also told the cops that her little brother was tied up and that her mother did this since her siblings tried to steal food as they were hungry. When the cops asked the reason to the parents they couldn't provide a reasonable answer. Later some of her siblings got adopted and some were in foster care (it was a big family with only two parents). All of them were suffering from malnutrition. Some of the children were also protecting their parents and telling in the court that it wasn't their fault and that their mom and dad did this only for their own good. After 2 or 3 years (i can't recall) the parents wrote them a letter telling they were sorry and that they only did it for their good and that they loved them. (i am sorry for my terrible explanation since english is not my first language and it has been like 5 months since watched this case so i cant recall much abt its name and stuff)

Imagine the kids actually interact with someone and they say “Brb I’m gonna go eat a dog” 💀

The movie is about a family where the children are secluded from the rest of the world. The parents, the patriarch and his wife, give their children tape-recorded lessons that deliberately teach them the wrong meaning of words. The children are also forbidden from leaving the house, which is surrounded by a physical fence. The father forces the children to be terrified of the outside world by introducing them to the myth of the dog tooth. The myth is that the children must wait for their dog tooth before they can leave the house without fear of death.
The movie's plot also involves the elder daughter's awakening and her seeing past the obscurity to seek the truth.
The movie's ending is unclear, with a closeup of a car trunk that's unclear as to whether the eldest has escaped, will escape, or has died in the trunk.

This Greek import centers on a mother and father who have raised their three children in perverse seclusion. Now approaching adulthood, the two sisters and brother have their own arbitrary vocabulary (“telephone” stands for “salt”), engage in daily contests in order to earn stickers and are told if they leave the walled yard they’ll be torn apart by cats. Many times literal blindfolds are placed upon them, and metaphorically that’s how they’ve lived their entire lives.

It’s clear something is very, very wrong from the opening scene, as the siblings listen to their mother’s vocabulary “lesson” on tape. At the lesson’s end, the youngest girl suggests they see which of them can hold their finger under scalding water the longest – suggesting competitiveness and physical cruelty is also part of their unique language. It’s an uneasy combination that percolates through the rest of the film, threatening to erupt in a deeply disturbing way.

Writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos proves to be an audience manipulator on par with Michael Haneke, who messes with our heads in ways that are both brilliant (Cache) and heinous (Funny Games). Lanthimos carefully arranges each frame, often leaving crucial action just beyond the edge of the screen. It’s a maddening technique at first – you want him to pan the camera here or tilt it there – until you realize Lanthimos is treating us the way these parents treat the kids. He only allows us to see what he wants us to, not what we “need.”

It becomes increasingly clear that one of these kids is going to snap – you’re just not sure which one, and when. It’s interesting that the parents begin to lose control when they let sex slip into their cloistered world. They’ve arranged for a woman to come and “service” their son once a week and her presence has a ripple effect on the entire household. She’s essentially the serpent in their deranged garden of Eden.

Dogtooth flirts with sadism, but it’s much more than a sick stunt (something you couldn’t say of Funny Games). The movie ultimately works as an intense allegory, not only for how parents will go to absurd lengths to control their kids, but also for the depravity of authoritarianism at large. Dogtooth indicts repression in all its forms, suggesting that it’s a sure way to turn society into a powder keg. As we’ve seen recently in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East, sometimes iron fists get bit.
