In today’s VLOG, January 3rd, a bit of a unique episode… I capture some of my conversation with an English school teacher in China, and an old friend of mine visiting from out of town. We discuss life for a teacher in china, and share his experiences regarding his students. Anny weighs in on her personal experiences as well.
Other topics:
The hard life of Chinese students.
Piles of books.
Students with IV’s at their desks.
Students tasked with cleaning the campus.
Hard life of Chinese students.
We also talk about the opportunities of living and working in China as an English teacher. If you feel you want to try to be a teacher… the opportunity is here waiting. For Andy.. teaching here gave him a chance at a second life.

The JY_VLOG is a series of semi-daily videos about my life living abroad in China. Early videos follow my expedition up Everest, and future videos will follow me as I cycle around the world from Ningbo, China to Los Angeles, USA. But for now, the VLOGs follow my everyday life in China, and give you a glimpse thru my lens at what its like to live in Asia, and all the hilarity and drama that ensues. Ohh.. and I have a reef tank, fly drones and ride trikes… so if that wets your fancy, subscribe to see more every day.

Kudos to Andy for finding a new purpose in his retired life. We as human beings are always searching for something new and exciting at different ages and there is no reason to stop that after retirement. I admire his courage and positive attitude towards life. Also, I was very touched by his genuine and responsible words to the other English teachers in China. Thank you :)

Actually I miss high school life, we knew what we should do and do it in that time.It is not painful for many students in china. It's our hard but meaningful time.

remind me old time in high school, a suffering but meaningful experience. I would never be so patient and insistent like that. Everyday had the same routine, endless homework, frequent test. Holiday was so valuable, just one day a weak. But at that time, I put my all attention on study, same as other classmates, having strong faith, fighting for dream everyday, doing best in exam. the high school life may be bored but no time stop to consider it. I still remember the excitement when figured out a tough math question and happiness when knew school gave us two weeks holiday.

Thank you Matt, another interesting topic you guys talked about, I have gained perspective and enjoyed the whole video including the greatest piano play I have ever liked, no joke :-) . Btw current education system in China may look rigid but I think is what China practically needs now as a developing country where the main objective is to basically equip people with proven survival skills to feed themselves first before even talk about excelling with creativity. So far their strategy works well. I have no doubt China will need to adjust slowly in future to allow some room for cultivation of creativity as their people have fulfilled basic needs. Nice sharing, dude. JaYoe!

It really depends on schools' management. When I was in high school, we were told not to have anything on our desks when we left... even when we went to PE class. It's not mandatory, but almost no one puts many books on the desk.
So every school is different.

Yes! Educational stress seems fairly high in Asian countries. You'll find this a common theme in many Asian countries.

China does have a unique situation, I believe mainly due to the culture revolution, we have a giant gap, in terms of education. In another word, we just don't have enough good teachers for the massive population. When you have a lousy teacher, the only way to get a semi-decent academic performance is through brute force, namely overwhelmed by homework and tests--- these things can be produced by a handful of brilliant people, and the rest of the teachers just serve as overseers(监工)

I was one of those students. Getting into a good university is very difficult in China. It's a huge competition. Chinese people believe better education can make life better and easier in the future, although it's not a guarantee.

great discussion guys! covered couple of very interesting topics -- 1) how demanding the chinese education system is, and it's only understandable to westerners when you start considering the size of the population and just how competitive the job market is over there; 2) learning a foreign language can be extremely superficial in china when your instructor has no indepth knowledge of the background culture

One major usage of those books are to block the sight of the teachers so that they won't discover the students using cellphones or taking naps. LOL

Too many students fight for too little high level education resource. Two results come out of this extremely highly competitive environment. 1. High IQ. 2. Low EQ. The low EQ part will get better after they graduate. Your video is awesome, keep it up.
