The LEGAL Gibson Copy ?

Restring Sunday is back (again/ for now) This is one of the few examples of a legal Gibson Les Paul copy. To be fair, it didn't start out as legal and only became that after it was argued successfully in a Japanese court, but hey, It is what it is. A Burny Les Paul (Luper Prude)

It says "Super Grade" on the headstock. You have to squint a little to see it but it's there.

The lawsuit your referring too was filed in Japan and only applied to Japan. At roughly the same time they sent cease and desist letters in the USA which did dissuade burny, and Tokai etc from importing to the states. This is the reason why you can get them and we can’t in the states. I believe the EU and UK default to whatever is legal in the country of origin trademark wise. Meaning as neither Gibson nor burny make the guitar in the Uk they have no standing to prevent the other from doing anything

I have the black "custom" Burny LP with the chrome hardware and P90s, amazing guitar!

I have a Burny SG and it’s easily one of the nicest guitars I’ve ever owned. Absolute dream to play.

to KDH's point about country of origin, it call comes down to order of operations, Epiphone made a huge change to their chinese factories 3-4 years ago, where they changed their definition fo "quality". greater qc steps were taken, more presence to proper intonation out of the box, and cleaned up routes and wiring mechanics. That's why the newer epi's sound noticably better than their compatriots of 6 years passed. Same with squier china and fender mexico now becoming a lot closer in quality. It's all about where the parent company choses to cut corners whilst manufacturing in the far east

I've always defended Gibson's right to defend their intellectual property, but I think the Japanese court ruling is based upon common sense. It's about time the US court catches up.

Got myself a Burny LP custom with P90 a couple of weeks ago.
Love it.

Those burnys are great! I have an edwards ELP 92 with a comically fat neck that I tune to D standard with 13-56 and it also rocks. My most treasured LP copy though has the Gibson logo but really is an old 70s Japanese les paul copy built 100% fakethentic. It is aged to hell but plays great while still needing a re-fret. I call that one Murphy because it looks like a 10k murphy lab job lol

Your banter is surprisingly funny. More of you both for these restring episodes

I think the headstock is trying to say Super Grade while at the same time looking more like LP as some sort of Jedi mind trick.

I had a 90's burny in the mid 2000's. The thing was amazing. I stuck Seymour Duncan's in it but the stock pickups were amazing. Fit/finish, everything was spot on. Also owned quite a tokai's, a greco (I think) Edwards, and a few other lawsuit era Japanese guitars. All were a pleasure.

I think I have the same guitar and it also plays great.

I didn’t know the neck was maple which is interesting.

The headstock looks like it is spliced on differently to other LP style guitars and the machine heads have a silky smooth but robust tension.

You have both blown Chappers out of the water with your advanced playing style and intellect now. 🤘

I have a Chinese made Burny RLC 75S that I snagged on ebay years ago for £200! I only got it for the sustainer system which I was curious of, I am not even a Les Paul guy. Now it's one of my most played and loved instruments!

I assume this is the reason why there's so much Chibbos in the US as compared to Europe where you can get a Tokai or an Edwards at the average guitar store.

It sucks that most have 50's neck, though.

These are GREAT guitars!
During the 70s copies such as these were of BETTER quality than their US made inspirations! \m/

Since the original vid where Glenn got his guitar I picked up a mint burny gold top that had been upgraded with some Monty’s ‘full Monty’ p90 - for half what the guitars are new.. it’s a fantastic guitar and if it weren’t for my epi Lazarus which cost 3 times as much I’d be after one like Glenn has for sure
