📚Description: A viewer of the show purchased a broken Gibson BFG from me and sent it down to a restorer who basically made it a brand new guitar. Is it fair to even call this a Gibson yet when all that is left original is the body? I'll leave that up to you haha

Information on the hazy finish. In this particular guitar, multiple layers of clear finish were sprayed over several days, with sufficient drying time between layers. However, the top coat wasn't thick enough, and it was worn through during the final sanding/polishing process. The lacquer used in this instance doesn’t melt the previous layers but instead builds up on top of them. As a result, the sanding-through of the top coat creates a hazy interface, which will shift depending on how the sanding/polishing continues. The only way to fix this is to apply a new, sufficiently thick top coat. Been there, done that.

I feel like it probably would have been cheaper to just custom order a fully new guitar

One of those instruments that you get married for the rest of your life cause you will never ever recover what you spent on.

This is a great resto-mod. I would be thrilled to death to get this result. Austin... has more detailed feedback 😬

When we re-neck a Gibson and have the original serial number, we mill that down and put it in a cavity. On the head stock, we use our own serialization with a rubber stamp. But evidence of origins is EXTREMELY important.

The 12 string nut is even more confusing than the 3 tone pots, because you would need different tailpiece and bridge to use the other string slots even if you kept it 6 strings.

6:25 the threads have been somewhat smashed due to the loose fit of the Nashville bridge. Doubt it's a problem but a clean up job with a die would fix it although the issue with the loose bridge will return if no other changes are made.

Man that metric truss rod is a huge bummer.

Yeah... first couple notes and it's a keeper for me. Nit pick if ya like. Definitely replace the foam.

It's got character. Really nice sounds. The bling will draw most eyes from the minor faults you found.
I think you did a Just inspection and asked some very good questions with good suggestions.
Especially the serial number.
As you pointed out we do not know the price point.

Pickguard was not made specifically for this guitar. Note that it was made for a P90 at the bridge and cut for the HB ring.

I feel like the guitar is wired incorrectly with a few cut corners in strange places.

Smart that trogly kept the company who did it anonymous.

You can get it your own way if you want a unique end result. The neck is nice. With a mohogony neck grating the number back on with pics would be good. With that neck stamp numbers and keep the origional headstock stamped peice and pic. It is a renecked gibson.

“We all have an expiration date”- nicely said, gentle sir 😇. Definitely a fancy boi; I like the neck and inlay work! Am curious about the price 🤓. Sounds good, and seems like your playing has gone up a notch 👍. Great episode, you do bring a practiced eye to these sorts of review!

To go with another commenter. Yes nice resto-mod guitar! Also you can get some cool aftermarket parts like the metal bridge pickup ring and lots of other stuff from Philadelphia luthier.

Love the looks and sound! I just hope it's what he wanted.

This is way more interesting than the usual reviews
It’s fun to see what sort of mods people go for.
Although oddball stock production guitars which aren’t the norm are fun
I like the regular ones sometimes, but the all blur together after a while

Very cool. I really don't like the bridge pick up ring.

Some bits are great, however.

Michael, you Sir are now in possession of a really fantastic Les Paul, way to go and congratulations.
Thank You so very much for sharing this with us.
Wow, I have a weakness for Abalone, well done Mike.
👍
EDIT: Your guitar needs a little TLC with its control wiring.
I've had a couple Luthier built Les Paul guitars made for me, even many years later I find them very, very satisfying.

The tuning stability could also be affected by a loose bridge that has a lot of play on the posts. Combine that with the issues you've way, Michael got a beautiful one of a kind guitar. All the issues noted are small and easily corrected.
