Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Los Angeles.

I had a version of your H-Frame easel but as the apartment got cramped for space I switched to a French easel. I absolutely love it and I had a friend who is into woodworking put together some dividers for the drawer. I can keep clean brushes on one side and dirty brushes on another. I keep mine in a corner which doesn’t take up much space. I also pull the drawer out and set my glass palette on it when I am painting.

I had the frech easel when I was a teen. I only ever used it to paint the artwork for my final grades. I went away and came back looking for it some years later but termites got to it (stored it in a bad place) 😩 It was a pretty great piece of equipment. I cant afford anything like it right now, so I'm just getting the aluminum one.
I'm gonna put it in my amazon cart so I remember it

What people need to keep in mind is that H type easel is for tall ceilings. Mine is not able to extend all the way up so I have to either cut the top or put extra support on the shelf to raise it to the level of my eyes. I don't understan why it is designed for lowering it to the ground but not lifting it where you need it.

I am purchasing a gift for my daughter. Should I spring for the Mabef portable easel? Or a Jullian? Is is worth the extra money? Or just a waste. I want her to feel special but don't like to waste money. She is not a professional artist but is resurrecting her life long interest in painting as a more serious adult hobby. She is talented and has had art lessons all of her life but not attended "art school". I have a Mabef studio easel but would I buy it again? Probably not. Not worth the extra money. What are your thoughts? I think I just answered my own question. Lol. Thank you.

Where do people put their palette, on a desk to the side?

Ok, so the common complaint on the French Easel that you've recommended is that the wood is relatively cheep and the screws strip easily/don't tighten easily. You don't find this at all? Thanks for your honest video and break-down examples of the french easel also.

Don't know why but I like to paint with the canvas flat on the desk. I seem to have better control of the brush.
