DON'T go to SUNRISE at ANGKOR WAT!

Location: Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia.

This morning we woke up at 4 a.m. to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. It was OK... To be completely honest, I think there are much better ways to spend your morning exploring the Angkor Temple complex.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat is OVERRUN by tourist. Yes, we did contribute to the problem, but that's beside the point. When we showed up to Angkor Wat at 5 a.m. there were already TONS of people there. We weren't even able to get a seat on the far side of the pond. By the time the sun was rising, there were over 2,000 people watching the sunrise with us. The crowds were almost more impressive than the sunrise.

Don't get me wrong, the sunrise over Angkor Wat is beautiful, but so is everything else at the Angkor Temple complex. I would suggest getting up super early one day an visiting other temples besides Angkor Wat at around 6 a.m.. You could have the amazing temples to yourself while everyone else is fighting at Angkor Wat to snap the best picture of the sunrise.

As a young boy about nine years old then, I was there with my family in mid 1969 before the war started. As I remember like yesterday, I did not encounter any tourist. Our family had to stay at the buddhist temple around the area. There were no hotels or guesthouses around. Now, most of my family members did not survive the Pol Pot. Only my sister still lives in Phnom Penh. I had to leave the country by boat in late 1979 from Sihanoukville and came to the US in early1981. Angkor Wat was so peaceful and wild then. Thanks for sharing!

I was at Angkor Wat for sunrise in July 2016. Maybe a few hundred people were there, definitely not thousands. I spent three days touring the huge Angkor complex. I thought it was a unique and enjoyable experience and I'm glad I did it.

You two get along so well. If my husband and I had a day like the one you had we would be screaming at each other. I especially like when you get separated and can't find each other and instead of placing blame on anyone Nate realizes that Kara is probably as annoyed as he is. You gave me something to strive for. Great video!

You saw everything in the exact same order that the large tour groups move through the sites. If you had done it in reverse order ( as we did ) you would be standing in most of the temples practically alone..and having an amazing time.

I actually felt really emotional when we did this. Temples blew both my husbands and my mind. We're not religious but my husband had a moment when he was blessed by a monk.

it's so weird binge-watching these during quarantine and seeing how different the state of the world is now. I'm so happy for you two that you got to spend four years traveling the world and seeing all there is to see before COVID hit. Who knows if what you two have done will ever be possible again? So weird to see casually large crowds of people and shared things like audio recording devices in museums, or oxygen bars in lounges. It sucks not being able to travel, but i'm so thankful i have your videos to watch during these strange times <3

Really nice filming and music usage on the sunrise portion! It’s so charming and inspiring to watch these early episodes. You guys have become more sophisticated storytellers, hosts, and travelers over the years. Your channel is making the pandemic (and the election) bearable!

I have been to Angkor Wat twice and both times to watch the sunrise. Both times were magic.
Don’t let shallow people put you off this amazing experience!

I just want to say that after the sunrise non-event (which I was also underwhelmed by a few times) the way you edited the Angkor Wat temple complex was really excellent and must have taken a long time. But you captured the essence of the place in a way I haven't seen in any other video. Really great. Thanks. I have been there more than 10 times, and every time i feel there is something missing there, as if the soul of the place has gone, which is why I would say the Bayon is the best place for sunrise because you are alone as it has an incredible atmosphere with all those stone faces, which is somewhat lost when surrounded by 100 jabbering tourists who flood there later. If you ever go back I would say go to Banteay Srei temple...its 30 minutes further and is older than Angkor Wat and its like a mini version with far fewer people, and the stones are a beautiful rusty brown.

This way the first of your videos i watched. You sold me on your channel with your honesty. I had seen Angkor Wat and think you captured the place and the experience as i know it. Consider me a vote for you to never censor yourselves.

Angkor Wat is amazing but even at 5am there are thousands of people. i actually enjoyed visiting the other temples more where I had the whole place to myself from 5-6am.
