As someone who played with the 2013 LEGO firefighter sets, i understand that you don't like them. But some sets where pretty fun for the "7 year old me" i remember that my parents surprised me with a firefighter minifig pack and a police pack, and i had a lot of fun. The point is that every generation prefers the sets from there days because it's what they had fun with and don't like the new sets, i also don't like some of the new sets with giant pieces. But, nostalgia will always be really important for all of our opinions. In the future, the 7 year olds of today will defend today's sets, because it was there childhood.

The main issue with LEGO City's more recent waves is that it mostly caters towards the show, LEGO City adventures, which isn't really bad, because it's a show. Franchises got to make money. But the show is so silly, and unbearable to the point where the sets are just... too crazy. What made LEGO City better back then was the sets were mostly just slice of life builds. Sure, things were less detailed, but it added to the simplicity that theme bought. Today, we see the capitalizing and corporate tactics like an ice cream truck chase, branding to flex characters from the show, box designs that are supposed to look "cool and epic" to children. The usage of experiments is also a contributing factor because of the new road plates (though the old ones weren't any better to be honest). But my biggest issue with the road plates is that it is marketed as a "must have" and that is just graining to look at.

Of course, LEGO City is now nearing 20 years old (without even taking to World City or Town Classic), so changes will be expected. LEGO City was always supposed to be meant for kids below 12, so safe to say many of us are too old for LEGOs and thus are out of the intended age range, but seeing one of the most nostalgic LEGO themes turn to this is... kind of sad. There are some things in the future to look forward to though.

Lego City went in these stages:
2005 - start with bad or ok sets that were much better than the World City sets - 6.5/10
2006 to 2008 - start of Lego City golden age - 9/10
2009 to 2013 - peak of Lego City golden age - 10/10
2014 to 2016 - medium decline of Lego City - 7/10
2017 to 2018 - small improvement of Lego City Sets - 8/10
2019 to 2022 - huge decline in Lego City sets - 5/10

In their defense, the 2018 Construction Loader was a good, original vehicle. The Kayak Adventure set from the same year was also fairly good looking for the price. 4-6 Stud wide “Classic City” styled vehicle. Not to mention the recent 2020 Street Sweeper being a more modern version of a vehicle that we only got twice before.

Even as someone who was growing up with Lego City later (2010 - 2015) I have to completely agree. The old Lego City sets were great, even the newer older ones. The breaking point was the 2013 - 2014. I was still a child who LOVED Lego City, but in this period, I was starting to lose interest. It´s not like I grew up, because I still loved (and still love) the older sets, the new ones weren´t just appealing to me.

The main problem with the Lego City is the theme. The old Lego City had many themes like Police, Fire, Hospital, Construction place, Airports, Trains, Space, Farm, Mine, Transportation, ect... and it really felt like a, well... Lego City. Today´s Lego City is just a new Police or Fire station with few cars every year, which doesn´t feel like a Lego City, more like Lego 911. I could accept that, if the new sets were at least interesting, but they´re not. They´re incredibly overpriced, boring and small and Lego knows that, so they throw a bunch of non-lego crap in them (Web shooters, working light, magnet) to gain at least some attention from children.

You seem to really like Lego trains, which I do as well (I had the 2014 trains which I loved), but I don´t think they should be released more often. That´d make them overwhelming, just like the new Police sets. But I still like the new trains. They´re the better part of the new Lego City, but they should return to Power Functions.

To make new Lego City sets actually good, Lego must bring back or think of some themes, and make them interesting and not overpriced, to make from Lego City, a Lego City. Btw, a really good video, the old commercials bring back so many great memories.

2013-2015 and 2016-2019 were the best years of Lego City imo, the 2017 Police station is the best police station

This video aged well as Lego has made another series based on Lego City called Lego City: No Limits. It's better than Lego City Adventures but not great as the new sets are based on them.

I gotta say what I think, all the lego city designers are millennials, thats why the aesthetics of the sets since 2018 are so ugly, it seems that a character from steven universe or the bare bears made the sets, they have too garish colors, that don't match at all, the faces and hairstyles of the minifigures are creepy, they're all police officers, firefighters or some random thing like an ice cream truck or a race track for the disabled, I can only imagine a woman/man in their 30s, single, with colored hair, overweight and square glasses, whose son is a cat named "Mr. cookie" thinking: "Oh yeah, kids will love this because I like it!!"


Wanna see the definitive proof? Go to a lego store, anywhere, kids dont even look at lego city sets, no even the 5yr old ones, they look at starwars, harry potter, creator, speed champions, literally anything without that ugly af design lego city has nowadays

Movies, TV and Games = succes and money and leads to sales of the connected sets offered. Lego has not had succes on standing alone with just sets since the 90s it's all about the connected media.

I own the newest police station and love it. In my opinion, Lego City rose and NEVER FAILED. The new sets that come out nowadays are phenomenal. I especially love police and fire sets.
