Amazing how a film can evoke such strong memories. This has to be one of my all-time favourite British films ever.
Remember watching this as a 14yr old at my S.E London Comprehensive as part of our English course in 1974.
We were all taking the p▪︎▪︎s out of their Northern accents and the state of the area they lived, their rundown houses etc. Truth was, we didn't have a clue of life outside S.E London.
We felt so elevated! It didn't register that socially we wasn't much different. Our 1960-built Council Estate with so lovely in comparison.
Of course we had kids who got free school meals, were impoverished, had a bad home life. They were part of our social group but back then they stood out like a sore thumb cos it was known they lived 'On the Social'.
Skinny, scruffy little Billy Casper bore the brunt of our p▪︎▪︎s-taking. Remember all the girls screaming at the shower scene!😂
I hated Jed. What he did to Kes and how it impacted Billy changed our whole perception of this little film. His spitefulness and aggression was scary.
But it was seeing how his actions broke Billy. That had the boys go quiet and the girls battle back the tears.
We all recognised that the love he had for his Kestral and the freedom from his homelife meant everything to him.
Such a bitter-sweet story. Can still reduce me to tears now as a 64yr old.
Barry Hines. Ken Loach. Colin Welland. Brian Glover...Thank You All for this wonderfully honest, gritty depiction of 60s Britain.

Never thought I'd be nostalgic for the combined smell of beer, stale piss, disinfectant and cigarette smoke

I was brought up around the working mens club scene in Bradtord in the 70s and 80s. Nothing but great memories of organised trips to the seaside as a nipper, youd get some money in a little envelope for the slot machines. Playing snooker and darts as i got older with some fantastic down to earth people.

British mining towns, ripped away, by the Thatcher government.
I lived in St Helens, two working mines and lots of work in the mines. The town self imploded when the mines closed, great times as a kid in that era...

I always saw this more as a working mens club than a pub

The football match with Brian Glover as the sports master is still the stand out scene from Kes for me

Didn't know Lee Evans was singing in the clubs before his comedy shows. 😀

Anyone think the singer looks like he could be Lee Evens' dad?

We were introduced to that song at school when we were reading 'A Kestral For A Knave' (and watching KES to accompany).

Our teacher said "This song appears to be about a great big marrow, but if you listen, the words are actually NAUGHTY" ! Hey, we were only 12/13 years old!

my parents and us kids often went to the local working mens club when i was a nipper in the 60's, full of family and friends, club turns, bingo, booze, yard of ale competitions on boxing day, card games, you name it, great times and we loved it.

Vic and Bob's skit on Kes was a banger, funniest thing I've seen on TV, Casper, Casper .
