From a small town in the heartland of Scotland, it’s little wonder Danko looked further afield for musical inspiration.
The result is a band who are innately Scottish yet deeply rooted in Americana, influenced by the soaring, radio-friendly melodies of Kings Of Leon fused with the modern folk of Nathaniel Rateliff to create a sound entirely their own.
New single Gecko – out July 15 – showcases perfectly how the band have evolved from critically acclaimed releases like Rattlesnake, and just how far they have come in less than a year.
Frontman Lewis said: “Lyrically and instrumentally Danko have moved forward even from debut releases Rattlesnake and Be Fooled. Gecko is definitely one of our more mainstream offerings from this collection of songs so we’re hoping it goes down a treat.
“Gecko was born out of the main piano/guitar riff, we wrote a song based on that then got the final structure in place. It’s a short, in your face, driven kind of song and we hope you love it.”
The band have been tearing up stages throughout the UK in recent months, with Eden Festival, a sold-out King Tut’s, Sound City Liverpool and many more.
And while for this band it is ALL about playing live, they’re thrilled with the new songs – the first time they feel they have REALLY captured the essence of a Danko show in the studio.
Lewis said: “We’re real excited to get another bunch of music out. It’s been a while getting everything to this point so it’s great everything is in place and moving. After our single drops we will be a gearing up for the release of our four-track EP. We really feel this is our best offering of music to date that truly represents exactly what we’re trying to do. We had the pleasure of working with Chris Zane on the mixing process and he has the tracks exactly where we want them!”
With plans for a headline tour late in 2022, numerous hefty supports coming in and a buzz building on the new tunes, it looks like this could be the year Danko get the recognition they deserve – both here and in the land which inspired them across the Atlantic.
“We want to build on our strong base of loyal followers in and around Scotland, get some more traction on streaming platforms and have a shot at getting to the USA next year! We believe Danko can take us all the way. Don’t get me wrong, as our song Weed Farmer says “I don't want fame, it’s not why I came” – we are 100% not here about us or personal achievements.
“It’s about the band and producing a high level of music than can bring joy and escape into other people’s lives. It would be amazing to get Danko to the point where it’s our full-time job, for me anything after that is a massive bonus.”
