Ajahn Sumedho was born in the USA, became a bhikkhu in 1967 and trained nine years under Ajahn Chah at Wat Pah Pong, a forest monastery in Ubon province, Thailand. In 1976 he was invited to Britain; he established Cittaviveka (Chithurst Buddhist Monastery) in West Sussex in 1979, and Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in Hertfordshire in 1984. During his thirty-four years of being based in Britain, he taught extensively throughout the world, has inducted more than a hundred aspirants of many nationalities into the samaṇa life, and also authorised the establishment of six other monasteries. Many of his talks are available in audio versions, and some have been transcribed and edited into a collection of books.

In November 2010, Ajahn Sumedho put aside his duties as abbot and teacher and is practising in more secluded environments.

Another talk by Ajahn Sumedho that I really could have used back when he gave it. Thirty years later and I feel like I just got this “message in a bottle” that I was supposed to get back then. Maybe I would be further along. Probably not. These things seem to crop up once one can understand them, I suppose. It would likely have been lost on me then. I still knew everything then. As I’ve gotten older I no longer feel so confident that I knew anything at all back then.

Thank you to Ajahn for sharing his wisdom, and to those who took the time to post this so I’d find it when I was open to it.

May all of you be happy!

I wish I understood even a small part of this. If we all sat around contemplating and reflecting when would the work get done?

Dear BUDDHIST TEACHER,
IN THE CURRENT MIND OF ME, perhaps the words of Buddha is like all existent, all nature, is an arrow pointing at own nature, pointing at what we are and his words is a great source of realization into own nature .
As one awaken to own nature, one no longer holds anything in mind and constantly at a mind readiness of change . One will no longer choose what to learn or who to learn from as all living or non-living regardless its nature is a great source of own realization and all is a great teacher .
So what is the reason for BUDDHIST TEACHER to teach Buddhism ?
Over the past 16 years, I had communicated with hundreds if not thousands of people in the circle of formal Buddhism studies such as monk / teachers / practitioners / followers etc and now reach a mind that claim all Buddhist Teacher regardless the nature of their teaching is someone that suffering holding on an expended large mind filled with referrals and teaching it to others .
In the current mind of me,
Buddhist Teachers had robbed the words of Buddha and like the nature of a parasite, taking advantage by teaching Buddha’s words to enjoy fame and recognition from public .
Buddhist Teacher in the current mind of me not only misleading Buddha’s words but is also responsible transforming it into a form of knowledge / culture even rituals .
Perhaps 2500 years ago, Prince Siddharta had found a key that could lead to realization of own nature and his words is like an arrow pointing at what we are but Buddhist Teacher is teaching people that the arrow is pointing at “ A Goal” and lead people chasing that goal .
I, by my registered name Ee Chuan Seng is putting a claim that all Buddhist Teacher is the “ Terrorist Of Mankind” for transforming perhaps the greatest discovery of mankind into a factor for human to continue to suffer. I am not a spam and will be responsible with all my claims .
Dear sir, are you are Buddhist Teacher or someone teaching Buddhism ?
The reason I contacted Buddhist Teacher is to challenge this current mind of me and a mind that question Buddhist Teacher’s role . I am currently at a mind readiness of change and regardless what, you are a great source of realization to me and always a great teacher .
So if you are a Buddhist Teacher or someone teaching Buddhism, I hope you could reply and allow me explore the mind of you .
Sincerely
Ee Chuan Seng

Thank you culture exchange blog. I am intrigued and fascinated by buddhism and the strength of the monks. However, due to my ignorance and lack of understanding I am still struggling. However, in my own defence I wonder what is wrong with desire and ambition etc. It seems to be a massive waste of time. To sit contemplating and meditating when the monks could be helping the starving in refugee camps (just an example). Sitting around all day seems like a huge excuse for doing nothing....forgive me, I am still trying and will continue to try and understand.
