세월호 인양, 해수면 12m 부상
We start with the latest on the salvage of the Sewol-ho ferry that sunk in waters off Korea's southwestern coast around three years ago,... killing three-hundred-four people.
A major obstacle that could have jeopardized the entire process has been removed... and with that... we're inching closer to the long-awaited raising of the ship.
We go to our Shin Se-min for more on the developing operation...
Semin, the process of raising the vessel was temporarily halted in the early hours of this morning... as the exit ramp at the rear of the ferry was found to be sticking out,... preventing crews from lifting it any further.
Now that the divers have removed the ramp, how far out of the water is the ferry?
That's right.
Just half an hour ago, divers and engineers at the site successfully removed the ramp, allowing the lifting process to resume.
The salvage team is back to raising the ferry, which is just one meter away from completing the first stage of the lifting operation.
Remember the goal is to get the ferry 13-meters above the water level,… and the oceans ministry confirmed early this morning that they have raised the vessel 12 meters already.
With just one more meter to go, it looks as though the first stage of the operation, which is to place the vessel on a semi-submersible ship,… will be completed by today,.. the last day of a neap tide, when the difference between the high and low tides is at its minimum.
Once the ferry is at the right level, it will be ready for transport to a port in Mokpo, some 90-kilometers away from the disaster site, where the search operation will start for the nine people still missing.
