Back in the early-mid 2000's when I was a VW tech, I had a coworker that told me about a B5 Passat that had coolant migration so bad and for so long that there was coolant in one of the tail lights.

I had a VW tiguan wolfsburg edition, pretty nice car with the 1.8t but traded it when the warranty period was over. Didn't want to open up the whole engine just to do chain guides and deal with carbon build up.

Clusters by Litke has posts on his facebook page showing damaged mk4 clusters from coolant migration.
Easy to fix before it happens by drilling a hole in the coolant bottle connector, below the area where the rubber seal in the wiring plug is.
That way if it happens, it will just drain instead of migrating.

Worked at a vw for a year as a tech almost 10yrs ago now…
Heard stories of coolant migration and oil migration, I personally never saw it. On multiple ocasiona so bad it ended up in the ecm or even the cluster.
I don’t remember what caused the oil migration, but the coolant migration is known as the bottle, just uncommon.

i've seen the same thing happen with adblue/DEF level sensor. Have to replace the entire level sensor, wiring loom and if you're unlucky the DEF control unit as well

Carried out the exact campaign recall on a Tiguan you just referred to not that long ago, super fun😅

Just popped the connector off my 2017 GTI with 55k, bone dry! Something I will definitely keep an eye on for sure

Dang, I just checked my Mk7s connector after seeing this and, sure enough, green goop. But no other vehicle issues or electrical weirdness.

Question, because I can't seem to find an answer, but assuming it made its way some bit up the harness, but not far enough to cause electrical issues, does replacing the bottle and connector "stop" the issue, in that whatever has migrated won't migrate further? Or am I screwed and it's a guarantee I need to replace wiring since it will continue to travel?

I figure if the bottle is replaced, whats in there already won't travel any further and with 130k miles on my Mk7, I'm not exactly keen on doing any wiring work than is entirely necessary. I'd rather replace the bottle, clean/replace the connector, and forget about it. Is that how that would work?

A3 would get that problem too. Coolant makes its way all the way to the Central Electronics, where harakiri happens. 🪦

I've seen that happen once on a passat, it caused a dtc for the AAT sensor

The recall was running a wire from the sensor to the module and it paid like shitbfor warranty

C7 3.0t has a migraine issue too. The heater coolant valve can migrate to the transmission module. No goodo!!

I just checked mine and looks like the evaporation is getting up in the connector. No color, no smell, no problem?
