The basic fundamentals of COM and the inter-op with the windows API are so nuance that most programmers gloss over these abstractions on the regular. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL FOR ANY GOOD PROGRAMMER TO UNDERSTAND.

At the time of writing this playlist is ~4years old and is probably still the best resource for learning WinAPI and D3D. kudos dude!

I've been putting off learning COM (and ultimately DX11) for so long because I didn't understand this specific part. You just made this so easy for me to understand. It's not hard at all. Now I only have hard time with remembering macros and when to use const and bitflags
