Playing Warhammer: Inquisitor, and I was doing a side mission where I had to put down a rebellion caused by an Alpha Legion champion. Finally get to him, and he ends up making a really good point. To summarize what he said, because I don't remember it that well; "Is it I that is in the wrong here? Our father did not wish to be worshipped, but you all treat him like a god. Come, face me now heretic! For the Emperor!"

Makes sense really, especially if you consider that Missionaries usually adapt and includes local myths and beliefs in the imperial creed, not to mention the diversity of the worlds themselves (by logic, a peasant on a Feudal World will see and worship the emperor in a very different way from a savage warrior of a Death World), which is why one of the jobs of the commissars is to monitor and make sure that regiments from different worlds achieve cooperation despite striking cultural differences.

As a Christian I find it fascinating and I wonder if there are some cults within the ecclesiarchy that have attempted to connect the emperor to the abrahamic God of old terra it would be fascinating to see what kind of mental gymnastics and Theological rhetoric would be required to make that sort of connection

This is heavily talked about in Faith and Fire by James Swallow. It also serves to make compliance easier. One could compare it to the Church in the real world using similar dates to Pagans to assimilate them easier into Christianity
