, Head, Department of Plant Pathology, informed that the initial foci of yellow rust have been reported in locations from Ropar (Daroli, Chandasar, Chandpur Bela, Hariwal, Brahampur Hethla, Ajouli, Nikku Nangal, Dukli and Patti), Hoshiarpur (Khanpur and Makhomajra), Gurdaspur (Bhatoya and Khanowal) and Pathankot (Aasabano) districts on WH 711, HD 2967, HD 3086 Berbet, Champion, Shriram 1734 and other un-recommended varieties of wheat. These initial foci of infection of yellow rust have been sprayed under the supervision of experts and situation is under control, he said. Since the is air borne and favourable weather conditions for the infection, development and spread of disease are prevailing, some secondary infection may occur in adjoining fields of these areas, he cautioned.
To avoid the yield loss due to yellow rust and check its further spread to the other districts of Punjab, there is a crucial need to monitor the wheat field in sub-mountainous areas of Punjab for the onset of disease, especially, where susceptible varieties are grown, he added. If the disease appears in the fields, then spray the infected areas with recommended fungicides, such as Nativo 120 g or Caviet 200 g or Tilt/Shine/Bumper/Stilt/Compass/Markzole 200 ml in 200 litres of water. This will prevent the spread of disease in other areas, he said. Dr Singh further stressed on the farmers to avoid blanket or preventive sprays and apply fungicides only when symptoms are notice
