Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Had this happen on a white tail 3 years ago. Jacket separated on entry, the core stayed mostly intact and the deer dropped on the spot. Entry hole wad like 5 inches in diameter, the core was stuck on the far Hyde. It was a 180gr coreloked out of a 30-06.

I've killed untold animals with cup n core boolits. Core gos thru, the sharp edged jacket tears everything else up. Boolit placement is key.

Hahaha but here's the thing.
You recover those "defective" bullets from dead animals! Hahaha
I guess they didn't work!😂

Ron, You are old enough to remember when cup and core were the best technology we had. They still kill just as dead.

Years ago my brother took a deer with Winchester sp ammo. As the deer went down he noticed something hit the ground not too far in front of him. He found the separated jacket. It had caught a carragana branch and peeled off the core. The bullet still flew true and performed but was kinda interesting. He still has that jacket at home somewhere.

Most people need to focus more on being able to hit the animal properly than whether they're using cup and core or bonded bullets.

Mark this day, this is the first time I've disagreed with you! As long as it loses said weight inside the animal, the energy is dumped inside the animal. In fact this is a design "feature" of the 5.56 NATO usually referred to as "the lead snowstorm.

Started using Hornady Interlocks in 1991 and have been no separations on a couple of dozen whitetails. Also have used Sierra Gameking and Nosler Solid Base on three or four with no separations.

That effect means nothing to me, when talking about eastern whitetail hunting at least at close to moderate ranges, the deer is still dead whether or not you’re using a standard cup and core soft point or a higher tech bullet design. There is a reason why soft points have been a whitetail hunters bread and butter for decades Ron, you of all people know this.

That’s why when I hunt, I use depleted uranium, explosive tracers!

Yep, this is precisely why I use bonded core.

Best bullet for whitetail is 165 gr nosler partition for 30/06 it really slaps them down never had to track not one even two double lung shots on the run and both folded amazing action from them heavy hitting bullets

So bullet jacket was recovered from the carcass of a dead animal. Tell me exactly when, during the death of the animal, when the bullet failed?

Soft points work just fine. It's only people in the firearm Industry who are trying to sell new stuff that have a problem with them.

The trouble is that people seem obsessed with using light bullets shot at high (3000+ fps) velocity, when in reality most people would be better served with a heavier, softer bullet with lower velocity.

That's why I have been using Barnes all copper bullets for years with excellent results. Tipped or hollow point. Nothing better and it eliminates lead BS

With the cup and core 243’s I’d get the jacket in the hide on other side. Always get the animal though. I like it when the bullet goes right through and double holes just a pumping blood!! Easy tracking!!

I have seen this happen with Remington core Lokt (30.06) And someone’s sabot shotgun slug can’t confirm the brand. This is why I use Barnes solid copper or bonded bullets with the exception of my 450 I have been using a hornady XTP 300 grain havent seen it happen with that

Ron, Ron, Ron.... the animal is most likely dead with a well placed shot😅

have always used Core lock remington in my 308 mod 88 since the 70s. Have had this happen in several deer. The lead always was a nice mushroom stuck on a rib bone.
