In this video podcast I answer an e-mail from a viewer that has a tongue in cheek question about why they are struggling to catch catfish. Sometimes it can be hard to catch catfish, even if you are fishing with a guide. Hopefully the tips I pass along will help you catch more catfish.

HI Dieter, George here. I had a good day on Glenville lake up here in western NC. Cashiers NC. I was fishing for the huge yellow perch this lake has. well, the wind went to the east and all stopped. I found a rocky point that had wind driven current. I lucked up and got a good anchor point and dropped shiners down, 24 feet deep. I caught a big perch then a school of good sized channel catfish showed up on the 2D sonar. Know how I know? two rods at a time went down doubled over...the cats were about ten pounds each and it was great for just a few minutes and it was over. I got a great amount of meat in the cooler in that rush. I caught enough to go home happy. this lake is so clean the catfish are delicious. I got some of the big perch too. one is around two pounds. Thanks for all you do Dieter. George.

Thanks Dieter. Another great video. You just proved the old saying "it's called fishing, not catching for a reason". Some people want that key process to guarantee fish, not realizing it took time to learn the lake and all the points, ground cover, drops and flats. Along with what bait/lure works in those areas. You were spot on with this podcast. Thanks

Thanks again for another great and informative video. I'm bank fishing exclusively so we try to hit certain spots and just wait it out sometimes. Little harder to just get up and go somewhere when bank fishing due to access. Always love the videos.

11:27 I sometimes live in 2 foot of water! Watching a 20 pound catfish jump like bass is the most amusing thing ever!

I was blessed in life that my position in a company had suppliers and subcontractors taking me fishing all over the US and Caribbean.
My experiences with guides have varied greatly but from my observations success usually seemed to come down to the guide knowing the waters he was fishing better than most of us know our backyard and the fact that they are on the water 5-7 days a week.
I might take my boat out on my local waters 15-20 times a year at best (zero this year) and in those 15-20 times I will fish Guntersville, Wheeler, Wilson and maybe a trip or two to Pickwick or Weiss. A guide on any of those waters will generally fish their "areas" 20-30 times in a single month, year after year, and when they don't have clients they are out fishing trying to find new areas. There is just no way that your average fisherman can accrue the amount of knowledge about a specific body of water, under varying conditions at different times of the year that a GOOD guide has.

My trips and tactics are mainly based on the wind direction, seasonal patterns, and usung the thermocline to your advantage when it's present.

That’s why they call it fishing lol. Great videos. I have a hard time with my fish finder, most of it is operator error for sure, but still learning. I think time on the water means everything, just like time in the deer stand and big bucks.

Seasonal patterns and local flow rates and water levels are 100% in play here. For my guide trips I purposely never try to fish the same spot 2 days back to back. I have built up a cache of spots to keep things fresh.

Good stuff. I understand why you avoided it, but for eaters/channels, there is no question many guides are baiting holes. It only takes a few minutes searching the internet to figure out what they are using to do this. I'm interested in big blues so I have never went this route. A guide that can consistently put people on fish over 25lbs in peak season is worth their weight in gold. I learn something new from our favorite catfish guide every March when we go out.

The cows don’t always graze in the same spot in the pasture every day. In my experience blue catfish will migrate depending on bait and water conditions. You gotta have multiple places to try.

Have you done any videos that explain what is on the screen of the fish finder. Like things you look for that catch your attention

Admit it! It is Guide Voodoo! I fished for years with a guide at least once, sometimes twice a year, but if he was booked up on the day I was looking to book we would do a tagalong that day making sure to give his trip plenty of space or if he was busy off the water he would let me know what had been working lately. I told him he needed to start a subscription service for fishing info like buying a hot sheet at the horse track.

If these folks are fishing for catfish, they shouldn't be lurking at any spot very long. I usually give it no more than. 30-min. If catfish don't show, I move on to another spot. If catfish are there are are going to eat, they will bite. Stay mobile, even on the bank. And, rely on place where catfish will generally be, rather than a random spot a guide found them. You've all heard it...wind blown points, rip-rap, eddie's, slack water, etc. There are just places catfish tend to like. Check em out.

Thanks for the great content we really appreciate it. I have learned so much about catfishing because of your videos. About how much does one of your guided trips cost?

The why is way more important to learn than the where 👍

I have never been on a guide trip. But I have spots and it depends on factors on witch spot i fish.
