This is a riveting prevention! All storytellers are wonderful, especially Allen Guelzo. I could listen to the collective knowledge of these men all day. Thank you very much for posting this.

Really excellent summaries. Wars are easily started, but difficult to finish.

Allenc guelzo is wonderfully adapt and consise author on the battle of gettysburg, a pleasure to listen to ( I suspect lee would have given Meade a bloody nose at Williamsburg if he had attacked ) .

I do not get it, why experts down play mead’s incredible performance at Gettysburg makes no sense. Yes he improvised off the pipe creek plan but that’s a credit to him. He beat Lee at the height of his power and saved the union. End of story. That makes him one of the greatest generals in US history.

Chamberlain had a lot of good in his post war career. He was govenor of Maine, president of Bowdoin college etc. That historian needs to read more and return his degree in disgrace.

Meade had the same luck as Monty, before monty there was Aleaxender a great orgimiser like Hooker ..
So both had Luck ..
but i am a Longstreet fan " Even 3000 man can, t croos that field and take that hill, it matts ..Hancock will not give in " thats more than knowledge for that time ..
WW1 and the trench battles had still to come ..
Longstreet original name is LANGSTRAAT from Zeeland ( psrt of Holland, Europe)a place in wind and water, stubborn people were born there ( part of the Boers of Afrika came from over ther too)
So Longstreet is ours and he was right ..
Good docu and greetings from Holland ( europ)

Personally, in my humble opinion… I believe general George Meade made the correct decision, not pursuing/closing/in his hand on the army of Virginia.

Too bad they glorified the Lost Cause Myth so heavily. It taints the entirety of the film and makes is worthless.

The decline of texas (does not deserve capitalization) is amazing. From bravery at Gettysburg to cowardice at Uvalde. Disgusting. We all know why the texas rose is yellow now.

I love “Gettysburg, ” but I wish Maxwell wasn’t involved. He’s just reiterating outdated historiography.

Also, for the record, he’s playing fast and loose with history when he says he’s been making ACW movies for nigh thirty years. Turner asked him to direct “Andersonville” (1996) and he refused stating, “I’m done with the Civil War.”

Nothing wrong with an artist sticking to their guns, but let’s live and die honestly

Not the whole damn reb army…such a stupid ass line. The army of Tennessee and the army at Vicksburg not to mention the smaller units…I love history. Just wish history movies could ish right.

If Meade had attacked Lee he woukd likely have been repulsed. However a diffrent commander may have detached part of his army and blocked Lee's escape route. Forcing Lee to attack with great loss again and maybe surrendering. So many what ifs.

The sad thing was at the time European military observervers came back with ' there is no doubt that these fellows on both sides are brave but they are fighting a Napolionic war with modern arms. Their tactics and manoeuvres are so old fashioned that it beggars belief that they wish to try them ' it rings true today. US forces have all the equipment and logistic capability but they cannot win anything with their soldiering. The Germans in WW2 called the Americans 'Britain's Italians'. Stick to what you are good at, making stuff and let us Europeans do the fighting.
