2011, Lahore. At a café a Pakistani man named Changez (Riz Ahmed) tells Bobby (Liev Schreiber), an American journalist, about his experiences in the United States. Roll back ten years, and we find a younger Changez fresh from Princeton, seeking his fortune on Wall Street. The American Dream seems well within his grasp, complete with a smart and gorgeous artist girlfriend, Erica (Kate Hudson). But when the Twin Towers are attacked, a cultural divide slowly begins to crack open between Changez and Erica. Changez's dream soon begins to slip into nightmare: he is transformed from a well-educated, upwardly mobile businessman to a scapegoat and perceived enemy. Taking us through the culturally rich and beguiling worlds of New York, Lahore and Istanbul, The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a story about conflicting ideologies where perception and suspicion have the power to determine life or death.

Relax it's just a movie. Just reflecting back on what went on in the past, just because it's bitter doesn't mean no one should talk about it. I'm glad this movie touches on the events individual had to go through and how just one event can change the outlook on someone's life entirely.
It has happened, Americans. Stop being in denial.

In the book the 'fundamentalism' bit refers to his assumption of an American identity above all other considerations in his life, something he is reluctant to do. I think so anyway.

If you bothered to look into the subject of racism, even on the most shallow level, you'd see how prevalent racism is in almost every facet of society, and yes, this includes the government, even though obama is part kenyan.

The idea behind this is a very provocative one. Even if it were to have nothing to do with Islam and it had to do with your parents having been, say, "mob" or you get into a fight, reluctantly, and you are a "fighting man" by profession, and end up killing someone. The cards will be stacked against you. It's the "idea" of being that "one" guy that is innocent and being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Sad truth.

What are you talking about? Half of Hollywood actors are Brits, Australians or Canadians, acting "American" all the time. Marrocco doubles for Irak, Iran & rest-Africa, and half of the time you think a film is set in the USA, it is actually shot in Toronto/Canada. All of this has nothing to do with "be real", it's about tax cuts, local financial film support and talent...
Hollywood is not in the "be real" business, it is in the "make believe"-business.
