From horse and cart at the start of the 20th century, to having a man on the moon by 1969 was incredible technological development, I wish we still had this today but it was a remarkable time.

What really got me about that rope memory was the sheer sequential nature of assembling it. When we say "assembling", I'm unaware of but assume they used a cross-assembler on a mainframe or hand-assembled but either way, the physical process of assembling the bits meant that when a bug or constant needed emending or other program change was required, the only option available was to unfurl or otherwise pick the weave apart up to that point and start rethreading.

When I was a kid my grandparents had a neighbor was an engineer who worked on Apollo. He told me some fantastic stories. Unfortunately he died long before the book was written.

My favourite Moon doco(s) is on youtube. No narration, just sounds and actual radio comms. The Apollo experience: Apollo 17. Uploaded by Spark.

Another great one, JMG! Thank you. I don't want to totally forget about the problems in the world today, but this was an excellent and very unique break. Stay safe. :)

It's hard to believe we didn't lose a man on the moon. I mean people die on the way to the store everyday and these dudes flew to a foreign sphere

50 years ago Men and women in the U.S. with graph paper and computers with the power of a calculator landed humans on the moon. Today we have the internet, smart phones that can connect to any information source on the planet and quantum computers yet we can not even get a person to low earth orbit. What a bunch of self loathing egotistical professional complainers this generation has become. The asperations that the youth have today is abysmal compared to the 40s 50s and 60s. I used to think the more access to information would spurn on an explosion of innovation, But alas the Digital Domain has become a trap for our children. I am beginning to think the greatest Fermi Paradox filter is the inconvenience of reality.
Thank you John for Bringing on Nancy Atkinson and helping me reminisce I enjoy your programs greatly.
