On average, educated people are richer and happier than uneducated. The problem is only when educated people got only school education, but didn't get any "social" education (like stress management, money management, delaying gratification). We usually get "social" education from parents, unfortunately many people (even those with degrees) had parents with issues (alcohol, gambling, disability), so the kids have to "unlearn" bad habits from parents and learn good habits, which is insanely hard, and that's the main reason why even well educated people sometimes are poor.
Second (less important) reason is that educated people often stay in academia (e.g. as researchers or academic teachers), and earning of researchers vary, some earn a lot, some earn only small salaries.
