(Bare Knuckle vs EMG Pickups (81 vs Painkiller

I got this awesome Charvel model 5FX a few weeks ago and it came with these EMG pickups in it, so I decided to get some Bare Knuckles because I'm really not fond of EMG's..
I was too eager to replace the pickups so I didn't compare to many sounds haha..
Anyways the Painkiller is really a great pickup, I dig it!
I needed to adjust the height of the Trilogy so it sounds a little weak in the video.
I'll make a proper demo video for these pickups soon, stay tuned!

EMG's are kind of like that one dish you order all the time at a restaurant you like going to - after awhile you know what to expect and it's just not that exciting anymore. Great playing and comparison!

Great video! I also have a Charvel Model 5FX with the old sautered EMG-81 bridge, EMG-SA neck, 90's gold Original Floyd Rose tremolo that's pretty worn and I'm looking to go to all passive pickups on it as I need more dynamics too. Been researching Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio pickups as Bareknuckle pickups are out of my price range and on the Seymour Duncan side have had a recommendation if a 59/Custom or regular Custom or Custom Custom in bridge and a Cool Rails or a Classic Stack in the neck

What what do you think about the bare knuckle polymath bridge and neck pups? I just ordered a pair but I haven't put them in yet and now I'm not sure if I want to get something else

Could definately tell you were not comfortable with those EMGs, where I'll agree, they lack dynamics. But they also are reliant on the player to add the dynamics. I prefer actives, but it's really a players preference on what works. What I've tried of Bare Knuckles, I wasn't a fan of, but my playing is also percussive, and I prefer any unwanted noise when I can, hence I gravitate towards actives. Solid demonstration though, and that 5FX is damn sweet!~ KEEP SHREDDING <3

I was an EMG guy until I bought a used Jackson with a Dimarzio X2N in the bridge. I was totally sold on high output passive pickups. I always thought passives weren't hot enough or had enough sustain. It turns out i was just using the wrong passive pickups. I upgraded all my guitars with Dimarzio X2N's and a couple with Duncan Distortions. That being said I don't dislike EMG's I just prefer the versatility of the passives not to mention the more powerful bass response of passive PU's. Oh ya the Bareknuckles were better by a wide margine. More bite and clarity.

I got my first EMG 81 in 1986 when they were the hot thing in the L.A. metal guitar shred scene. I had it put into a Charvel and I loved it. But I soon tired of it. Just felt like too much of a one-trick pony. I replaced it with a Duncan Full Shred which was new on the market and really loved it. More dynamics and texture and I didn't need batteries!

I have an older Jackson MIJ SL3 coming in that has a JB and two hot rails. I'll probably at least want to swap out the hot rails - what do you think of the Trilogy? I was looking at those or maybe the sinner for it...

EMGS are darker and a smidge less hot that the Bareknuckles which are more trebly. Other than that, I do not hear a huge difference.

Definately bare knuckles suit your play style more.

But you can hear the low mid chunk that EMG give is missing in the BK. Also EMG seem very unforgiving. For me EMG are hard to beat.

BUT you play better with BK so that’s your pickup choice. Metallica low-mid chug is EMG all the way and this shows clearly why active have a place.

Imagine if you could have EMG on E A D strings and passive on G B E 🤣 that would be ace!
