Hunt Submission in BJJ Like a Big Cat in The Wild

In BJJ everyone wants to be more offensive and hit more submissions. It's fun! In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu nothing feels quite as good as a well-timed submission. And so today's question comes from a White Belt who said he's defense is good but wants to turn up the offense now.

So in this video I'll share 2 things. #1 I'll share something that will destroy your ability to be offensive on the mats against similarly skilled opponents. #2 is a simple idea to eliminate this problem and how to become laser focused on your offensive techniques and submissions.

Now, I won't lie to you. The idea is super simple. But it's effective. It's something I still do to this day. And when I think of all my best students and friends in grappling, they do the same thing.

So anyways. . . Hope the video gives you some useful ideas to assist you with your training.

i’m gonna start pouncing on people from the shadows around town and putting them in arm triangles as an advertisement for why they should be training

This video is right on time for me. I am a new blue belt who did an open mat at a new gym today. Mostly white belts. I am so passive, each one got an opportunity to smash me for 5mins. I would lock up half guard and just deny submissions/passed. If they got a pass, I would go back to deep half. I eventually got tapped, no big deal. I left there thinking I needed to impose my will more. The white belts were young, a bit heavier than me and not unskilled, but I could take them. I am just so passive lol. So this video is right on time for me.

Paused at 27 seconds. I have been back for 5months lol.

EDIT: Just came back from an open mat and I absolutely crushed it. I got 2 kimuras, 2 keylocks, 1 armbar and a toe hold. Basically, me asserting my will led to me pressuring people into side control.

Great tip! Flow Rolling also really helps me to see the options I have in different positions!

This is what I’ve been doing and have found a lot of success with it. I lock onto a sub and all aspects of it and I steadily work towards getting into the position needed to accomplish that particular technique. Good advice Chewy, thank you for the video

This will definitely help out my game I’m always a little overwhelmed by all the submission possibilities and try to throw one together when the opportunity shows up and it never goes well

I just came across this video and it correlated well with what my instructor said tonight at class. I’m super defensive and am slow to initiate submissions and am not as confident as I know I can be. Thank you for this perspective- it was very helpful!

I have this thing where I feel guilty of going for a submission, maybe not Worthy of submitting someone, is a real mindfuck

Thx allot. Subbed today. Been doing bjj for a little over 2 years including the pauses from the lockdowns. 1 stripe white belt and have a strong feeling of stagnating. I mainly have time to train once a week. So progress is going slowly. It can be frustrating as newer guys own me regularly because they train more. Hopefully this helps!

what i have been finding to be really awesome and helpful is trying to develop that 3rd eye sense for what is open and where the pressure is.
i love to try and open up my opponent and splay them flat and getting high up into their armpits whether that is from side control, north south, mount, reverse mount, guard(prefer high guard) and then seeing what present itself to me. it involves reading the opponent energy and pressure he is giving me. the biggest issue i have though is trying to setup and INCITE the kinds of reactions i want.

i still get bit too narrowminded in my attack sequences. but i find much better roi being more open minded and even doing catch and release with lower belt and newer folks- like if i catch an americana and release it sometimes i can wristlock or armbar when they defend

Looking forward to this, I'm a very defensive player who enjoys defense, I know I need to improve here (2 Stripe BB)

Yes! I train at a very competitive gym, we do camps for IBJJF and ADCC and show up in force. We have a renown front headlock series from one of our black belts, and an arm drag system as well. The entire idea is, beat them with violence of action! Just go for it. Hunt it down! Think about your escape if you get caught, outside of that you need to impose your will!

And we get laser focused on the two systems, and whether you know what we’re going for or not, it really doesn’t matter (for our upper belts anyways 😂😅) we’re still going to do it!

Kinda miss the blue mats background 😁😁

i do like the idea of being laser focused though- makes you aware of what you have to shoot for to accomplish the sub.

Happy hunting. My go-to choke is the Ezekiel choke, opens up a lot of option if they're so aware of it.
