What is Fast Setting Concrete?

Fast setting concrete refers to a concrete or mortar mix that has had an accelerating agent added. This additive speeds up the initial set up time of a concrete or mortar mix compared to a basic mix design.

There are a few reasons you would want to use a concrete accelerator. One would be for cold weather applications. If you are pouring concrete in a cold setting, having it set up faster would be beneficial. Cold or freezing temperatures have a negative impact on newly poured concrete.

Another reason is for making pre-cast concrete or cement products using molds. If this making pre-cast products is a business then the quick turnaround use of the molds would be key for mass production. A concrete accelerator in the mix design reduces setup time enabling demolding to happen sooner.

The number one example of a concrete accelerator is calcium chloride. However, calcium chloride also accelerates rusting. If steel reinforcement is being used and rust is a concern, calcium formate or non-chloride accelerator is used instead of calcium chloride.
