Here's President Taft! To be frank, I had a lot going on around me this week, so struggled a bit with getting this song completed. This one felt a little uninspired, and my apologies on releasing it just to get it out on a timely schedule. Needless to say, I hope you enjoy it!

Went to Yale in ‘74, then, till ‘80, studied law
First, a lawyer, then a judge, integrity’s what people saw
’Twas around then William met Helen, ’Nellie’, who stole his heart
They wed in ’86, and since then, seldom were apart

Three children joined the Taft family, just one short of four
Helen, Charles, and Robert, who would be a senator
Will was Solicitor General, represented government
In ‘92, a circuit judge, then, to the Philippines, was sent
He governed there, and Cuba, too, then, in 1904,
Ted Roosevelt asked him to be Secretary of War

Our 27th president, William Howard Taft

In ‘08, Taft was chosen, ran and won the Presidency
He’d seek advice from Teddy, and served with hesitancy
He fought against business monopolies, unfair, he felt
But, he defended high tariffs and angered Roosevelt
He lost support from his party, at great political cost
And Ted made certain in the ‘12 election, that Taft lost

Taft then taught law at Yale, and in ‘21, became
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, his life’s goal where he aimed
He served until 1930, when illness had progressed
On March 8th in DC, William Taft died and was laid to rest
His legacy was justice, living by the rule of law
First to lead the Court and country, the best way that he saw

Apparently Taft was quite a nice guy. You could say he was a literal gentle giant.

This president was in a lot of emotional and physical pain during his time in the White House, but he did find something he liked about being president. He loved that he could appoint people to the Supreme Court. In particular, he loved being able to appoint Horace Lurton, with whom he had served on the Court of Appeals and had seen pretty eye to eye on most things.

Weird trivia items on this president:
He was notorious for falling asleep when he was supposed to be briefed on current events.
Even as an infant, he was significantly larger than most babies.
Someone tried to use his golf playing as a weapon against him in the election he ended up winning.
He was a force to be reckoned with in the wrestling ring as a young man. He would finish by picking his opponent up and throwing him into the side of the ring, and sometimes even out of the ring.
His vice president died during his campaign for re-election.
He appointed six people to the Supreme Court, and one of them turned out to be his own immediate predecessor.
He got rid of all the horses on the White House grounds, but he kept a cow.

Taylor died in 1850 when he won in '48, but Taft didn't die in 1910.
