Unlike many monarchies, there was no proper law of succession in the Eastern Roman Empire, so how did it work?

I wonder how the Romans could've fixed the succession sometimes, but I can never figure it out

I love watching these videos which increase my understanding of Byzantium. My late papou was born in Constantinople 1895 and I taught English in Istanbul so as much as I dislike cities I have a connection to Constantinople and Byzantium. I live in the Arizona desert and prefer nature to cities

Could you perhaps, cover Byzantine art. In particular Romaboos and Renaissanceboos often state that the advent of Christianity led to a downgrade of the arts. Such the statues after 300 AD look like babyfaces instead of the anthropomorphic earlier Greco-Roman, same in the paintings the anthropomorphic is replaced by the more symbolic hagiographic style. A lenghty analysis on the video would be great.

English succession was not strictly primogentiture. The Anglo-Saxon (pre-Norman England) Witan would elect the King. For instance Alfred the Great was elected King over the late former Kings son Aethelwald.

So by the last years of the empire, was Constantinople still a rich city at the center of numerous trade routes, or had ships found new waters to navigate?

You forgot to mention that Pulcheria ruled on her own right for sometime before marrying Marcian and if i am not wrong i remember having read that even after she kept a position pretty equal to him

Paul the Deacon (born in the 720s), says that Maurikios was:
“a Cappadocian by race . . . the first emperor from the race of the Greeks”

No wonder pretenders to the throne were often successful in deposing the current 'legitimate' ruler, even direct or appointed heirs of the ruling dynasty.
Would you agree that the notable Komnenian and Palaiologan dynasties were influenced by the model of contemporary hereditary monarchies in Europe?

Hi! What was the role of the Roman Senate in Constantinople, if any?

Who has the best claim to the title of Byzantine Emperor today?

I have a question for you or anyone with a semi-answer. Say my grandfather set up a byzantine dynasty. He had one son my Uncle, I’m though the only grandson. Son of the eldest daughter. My Uncle becomes King but has no sons, grandsons, but has on infant great grandson. When my Uncle dies would the great grandson be the heir? He is the great grandson of a King but I am the grandson of one also he’s a baby so would I get to be King but only for a time until he come of age? I’m writing a story and using my own family as a model for a royal family in it. Thank you

So Byzantium was, like the Augustan period, technically a "republic" up to 1453?

While we call the Romans Emperors or Monarchs, in truth if they existed today we would call the Dictators like the KIms in Korea. Since the do not fill the Western criteria for Royalty, half the Emperors were peasants.
