There's a variety of reasons. One is because older accountants are retiring and there's not enough to replace them. Second the perception of being an accountant in today's society is not a great optic for Milenneils, Gen Z and Gen A. Millennials would either get their accountant degree and jump into finance or banking. Third the Entry level is low and don't provide a great pay as pertain to other fields like computer science. Why go through four, five, to six years getting not only an accountant degree but go to school even more for the CPA. Most people are in debt going to school as it is. So why come out in 80 to 100k in debt starting out at 40 or 50k where yu can go into computer science and start earning 70k and up. Lastly work life balance is extremely unbalanced. Especially during tax time.

Also other viable career options such as youtube, tik tok, and instagram you can make more money for half if not little work at all. These are also viable career options now for some people. Accounting needs a complete overhaul of their perception.

The hours are way too much outside of government. Public and industry force so much overtime compared to other jobs with similar pay

I’ll give you responses from 5 peers of why they are leaving or have left accounting careers:
1. To be a dog trainer
2. Too demanding
3. Stay at home mom
4. Boring and too demanding. Need a more flexible schedule
5. Doesn’t really know what having an accounting degree has to offer in the area

Females going for IG and OF these days. Males are going for content creation, gaming, streaming, etc. If they do go to school they're getting trades to start a business or technology
