On my first day of college, I remember leaving my water bottle in the student lounge after attending my orientation. Some guy came running after me to return it, and I was so touched. This was a pretty rural college, and I used to spend the previous several years in a very urban area of the city (Chicago), and that would have never happened in the city. People are truly nicer, more descent, and more hospitable in rural areas than densely urban centers.

In the past I have returned peoples lost items many, many times, most of the time you get a thank you, more and more often you don't even get that, but I don't do it for the "thank you", even though that would be nice, I do it because it is the right thing to do.

Casey, you inspired me to place a sticker saying "Found? Please do the right thing" next to some contact details on it on the back of my phone. Fast forward a few months and I lose my phone whilst cycling. It was returned to me later that day by a construction worker. I'm sure the sticker inspired him to do what was right! Thank you, Casey (and the construction worker)!

That's cool. I got my wallet back once with absolutely nothing missing. I had an unlisted number & the person that found it brought it to my house. 
One of my friends found a gun in the desert (at a popular shooting spot) He made a little sign saying he found it & left his number assuming someone would realize it was missing & go looking for it. Sure enough in a few days someone called & identified it & they became good friends. 
I do think most people want to do the right thing but sometimes doing the right thing takes to much effort and, there is a point where that effort overcomes the desire to do the right thing. Leaving a number on your stuff makes it easy for someone to return your property.
