Welcome to Budget Tools Review, a new monthly special edition of Dev Kit Weekly where freelance technology writer and engineering consultant Jeremy Cook gives you a rundown of affordable workbench necessities.

On this episode, Jeremy is reviewing and demoing the OWON HDS242 dual-channel digital oscilloscope and multimeter. This 40MHz bandwidth ‘scope is capable of a 250MSa/s (single channel) or 125MSa/s (dual channel) sample rate and an 8K record length.

You’ll also be able to see the HDS242 in action with a side-by-side comparison with the higher spec’d OWON HDS2102S oscilloscope and signal generator.

For more information about these ‘scopes, there are written companion reviews on our site:

If you’re interested in getting an OWON HDS242 for yourself, they are available for purchase on Amazon, eBay, etc. starting at $125 for an unused one. Of course, we’ll still be giving away the ‘scope seen in the video at no cost to one lucky winner who enters the raffle linked above. Good luck!

This is a good instrument but it is not lab class. The problem is that it reduces the sampling rate as you lower the horizontal scan setting, which makes the analysis of low frequency (.1Hz) and short duration (1us) waveforms very difficult. I guess that other similar instruments have the same problem.

Hi, I bought the OWON HDS272 oscilloscope and I want to use it to adjust gain in a car amplifier to detect clipping, I play a 1000 Hz test tone and I increase even to the end, the waveform only increases and does not change to a square, I would really appreciate it if you could help me tune the oscilloscope?

Would this be okay to do some repairs on amplifiers? Or would a stand alone old/used 2 channel scope be better/nicer to use?

tnx for the review... I have a 5+ yrOld DSOnano {on old one}
one feature I like is to Save my screen/trace image to the SDcard
and move to my PC to save/eMail as desired. I have been looking
for a modern-budget Scope that
has "ImageSave" with DualTrace.
??? do these Owon, Hantek etc
units provide "ImageSave", just not highlighted in online specs...
or has that feature now depleted ?
tnx
