Five years ago, investigative journalist Nikole Hannah Jones, in collaboration with other journalists and historians, published a longform piece in the New York Times Magazine, called The 1619 Project. The project, first published in August 2019, marked the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery, and it aims to put race, the consequences of slavery, and the contributions of black Americans at the center of our national narrative. In the years since, Donald Trump’s GOP has launched a sweeping effort against the ideas at the core of the 1619 project, and other initiatives to address issues of race and identity.

My father grew up in segregation. That generation is still living today. We can’t ignore the history of our nation.

America fears two things the most: people who tell the truth about it and successful Black people. Ms Jones is both. May she be blessed with safety and security.

The consistent rebuttal of the 1619 project is American gaslighting at its finest..

I being a white woman
At age 73 also a liberal Have been educating myself on the civil rights movement of the 1950’s/1960’s starting with Malcom x. I had no idea about this author’s battle in this day and age upon reporting the truth of her people and the history of this country. I am and will continue to stand with the truth. As our stupid Florida governor has such a proclamation that slaves learned skills by being slaves. Is beyond anything I thought I’d ever hear in the 2000’s. Besides being appalled at such a statement being uttered who could support such a political party from such an appalling statement.

8:09 she says if you actually read the project, it's patriotic. And that's the wild thing. The core essay grapples with why her dad is so patriotic. Then it goes into how Black Americans made America so true to our written ideals

Being a white man myself I am not worried about people pointing out the bad stuff about our nation. Denying it is admittance that it still exists. I like learning from all people. They are just trying to make their way in life like me. And our conversation is seldom about race relations.

Nicole Hannah-Jones is a hero of mine. I'm a white woman who grew up in the 60-70's Texas. I knew our founding documents didn't reflect me or my Black or Latino fellow travelers. But even I, someone who thought herself enlightened, became angry the first time I read the 1619 Project. I sat the book aside and came back to it again after their words had time to get past emotion. When I reread the book, I understood better what they wanted me to know. I think this is a good day, a Sunday, to start rereading again.

The reaction to this book is not surprising. Isabelle Wilkerson have received the same backlash for her book, "Caste: the Origins of Our Discontent".

I love buying all these banned books and donating them to local libraries.

The irony of this man calling out lies, distortion, deception and falsehoods. He's got a nerve. You can't make this up.

Thank you, Ms. Jones, for creating and compiling the incredible work, The 1619 Project. I gave this book to my white, Texan father for his 89th birthday, and he is reading every page and experiencing a complete overhaul of his world view. I learned so much from this book, and am already making an outline from which to teach my grandchildren. Thank you!
