Handmade sew in cotton labels

Let me know if you have any questions! Happy to answer and help out. Tag me in your creations on instagram!

I sell scrunchies and hair bows! Check them out here:

What I did:
- Print out labels on heat transfer paper (mirrored/flipped)
- Cut up heat transfer paper labels
- Cut cotton strips double the size of your design
- Make a bias binding type strip with the cotton using the iron
- Heat iron to cotton setting and press (while moving) for 20-30 seconds. Trial and error recommended to figure out best outcome for you.
- (optional) Using a Heat press, press for 20 seconds on 180 degrees.
- Peeling when transfer paper is cool leaves a glossy finish where as if you peel while still hot its a different texture. Work out what is best for you.
- Trim off excess and cut leaving enough room to sew into garment or accessory

Tip:
✧ Always trial different heats and times to find the best outcome for you.
✧ Do wash tests prior to placing on garments that require machine wash
✧ Make sure you buy the right heat transfer paper for the correct printer

Look up a bias tape maker, they have them in like 25mm widths, you feed the strip through and "walk" your iron towards it, then pull it down the fabric more. It works great, and they're pretty cheap. It's just a little cone-ish thing that folds the ends in for you. Then you wouldnt have to cut the fabric strip in half and could just work your way down the whole strip

I really love your work. I discovered this trick, making your own labels, however, I use 22mm ribbon - works a treat. I do like the way you make your labels. I do not have a heat press. I use an iron. Thank you for sharing, Taylor.

I’ve done my labels myself for years, but I iron onto twill tape, so I don’t have to fold and iron the long edges. I only fold under the ends and sew on.

This was my favorite video on this topic. Labels for our hand mades are very necessary, but the choices are not very good. This was a well done walk through on your process and it was interesting to see how you incorporated your heat press into the plan! Thanks so much!!!

Pinking shears make a pretty edge for labels too, and prevent the fabric from fraying (as much)

Bonus! I have that exact heatpress! It’s a winner. Bought pre-owned as you did but couldn’t find any info online until now. I appreciate some of the tips on the tutorial! Thank you! 🎉❤️

I do this, but I use satin ribbon and have had no issues so far. It saves me having to cut, fold and press my strips. Thank you for the video :)

Thank you so much Taylor for the label tutorial. I have been watching an embroidery lady from UK about the same way of doing the label but now someone from home doing the same confirmed to me so I will try it. All the best! Oh and being subbie to.

Nice. Never even considered doing labels this way. I can use labels like this for our Walnuts we sell too.

I iron my fabric onto freezer paper and cut it a little smaller than the actual 8 by 12. I make my labels on a template online and send it to the printer. The labels are printed on the fabric.
