It was called the "Cosmological Constant" to suppress expansion/contraction. Einstein's "biggest blunder", in his own words. Except he seems not to be able to make a true blunder; even his "mistakes" are useful...

I don’t think the universe is going to constantly expand but constantly expand and contract like when you hit a rubber sheet it bounces back-and-forth that’s what it’s doing. Right now we are observing the expansion phase and then some hundreds of years later it will contract again and continue doing so for some millions or billions of years.

Considering we don't know for sure what the lightspeed is one way, and everything in the Universe seems to be oscillating waves. It might not bee to big of a stretch to consider there is fluctuation in this matter as well

Glad someone is working on this idea. When I first heard of the discrepancies in measurements of the Hubble constant, one of my first thoughts was that maybe the measurements are different because they are taking measurements from different times in the history of the universe. It will be interesting to see what finding they come up with.
