Hey there! Welcome to Day 21, and today let’s take the diphthong /aʊ/ and compare it with the previous one /oʊ/. But first, what letter combinations can give you /aʊ/?
- The -ow- combination as in how, allow, now or row (but it also could be /oʊ/ as in low or row)
- The -ou- combination as in shout or stout
- And the -ough- combination as in drought or bough
Let’s practice /aʊ/ and /oʊ/ together!

1. I now know how hoes mow.
2. I don’t doubt you downed the doughnuts, Mr. Brown.
3. Bow the bow in a row of rows rowing low and loud.
4. Bro’s eyebrows don’t allow the browser to browse gross cows.
5. The sounds of the town are the roads and the boats and the crowds and the ghosts moaning loud all alone.
