I use a cocktail stick, with generous amounts of olive oil and rinse in distilled water when finished. About 4 hours each side of a coin. 9:02

I wasn't sure what to expect from this - having heard all of the contradictory "clean/never clean" statements across social media. I'm a fan of Graham and the Composite Cleaning Pencil, so to have a really good, informative user video is great. Time to pull a few of my romans out of their cases.

Like the caveat to judge your coin first before deciding on the clean vs don’t clean. Most found are for the finders enjoyment (in my opinion) but occasionally the find transcends the individual to be a rare find. One needs to evaluate what you have before proceeding. Thanks for the video!

Hey Alex n Task, this was a really helpful vid, ty👍. I do have this pencil, however, after seeing your slant on things I can relate to my ventures with an enlightened understanding, especially on how to approach the various conditions of a particular coin, in short, I can now see where I may have gone wrong 😂, cheers Alex, G.

Well done young man 😁👍. I love the way you interject detecting videos with these educational ones - very interesting and helpful. I use those pens and associated products such as the wax. In fact Graham Dempsey, who designed and markets these digs with our club (South Northants MD). He's a really nice bloke. I have quite a stock of it as Graham lets the club buy at a discount and we use them as raffle prizes😁. I love the brass brush inserts, if you use them very gently they're great at removing the initial very heavy crud, allowing you to then use the black or white pen inserts. Hope all otherwise well with you, and once again, as I know you put a lot of time and effort in producing these videos, many thanks: they keep me entertained👍

Thanks Alex, I will give this pencil a go. I see someone mentioned ultrasonic cleaning, that too will make a very interesting video if you haven't already made one? I imagine you will be as interested in that as all of us.

I make the cleaning solution for Graham, I've been restoring ancient coins and artefacts for years now, also commissions from private collectors and museums more recently.

I would highly recommend using a microscope rather than a magnifying glass, for coins that are crumbling slightly especially, also using a microscope eliminates much if not all of the scratching or damage, ensures any softer areas are inspected & treated properly, speeds up the cleaning process and also brings you really fine detail.

You can pick up a 10X zoom stereo microscope for £30 online and it will last years.

Also a tip with the solution is to slowly add it to the coin forming a bubble, leave for 20 mins and use either the black tip or white tip depending on the encrustation, once you hit dry dirt again under the scope, wipe with a microfiber cloth and repeat the process, however with the "skin" off now leaving the fluid bubble on the coin is 5 to 10 mins as the solution soaks in much quicker.

Great video, A. All I could add to that would be to ID the coin as soon as possible so you know what's likely to be underneath the crud.👍
