Also be careful not to overshoot if you're young and flexible. I almost went over the other side the first time. I was about 5'1 and my horse was 14.2.

Thank you so much! Leading with the knee is a great (necessary) tip. I wish I had learned this years ago. I loved your demo at the end!

Me: A helpful tip would to be sure your horse is short *looks at my 16hh QH*
Alyssa: Watch me swing up on a 17hh Clydesdale!
Me: Nvm, I no longer have an excuse

I have ridden forever but never learned to swing up. I always jumped up onto my belly and swung around. I want to try, but will have to from the off side. My left knee is broken....at 56 can I do it??? My husband says no, too old. Now I have to get it done😁 Thanks for the great video!!

I tried this on my horse but before watching the video and I am just so glad my horse is such a saint because I failed miserably and he just took a nap 😂

Love the tutorial! This has become a competition at my barn now I’m 5ft and the tallest horse I have swung onto is 15.2 another tip that helps me is to do a skip-step instead of just launching off a regular step

Holy Moley! You are so athletic, Girl! Excellent demo I've always wondered the best way to do this.

Heh, 20 yrs ago my dad tried to show me that trick, he did the belly-flop version as it was always called in the barns, well he landed and continued right on over to the otherside. Landed on his back. Mare never moved other then to lower her head and turn it and wiggle her muzzle on his face as if to ask wtf he was doing down there. Apparently trying to remember what you did 50 years ago when getting up on draft horses that worked the farm to a 14.2 stock horse is different. I stick with the mounting block method, think its easier on the horse and my joints.

Wow! Thank you so much for this tutorial 🙏 I saw you swing up onto some draft horses and my jaw hit the floor and I so wanted to learn how to do this.

The first time i ever tried this, I was successful on a 16+hh horse. I honestly couldn't believe it and I don't think my gelding did either. I did it a few more times but ever since I haven't been able to. I guess I should probably lose some weight and stretch.

Hi Alyssa just wondering, how tall are you? It blew me away at the end to see you swing up on that Icelandic but you didn't look too big at all. Your video on the Icelandic horse has really got me interested in the breed and I'm excited that dedicated Icelandic breeders exist in Australia! I hope to one day ride an Icelandic horse, I think their unique gaits could help me to ride more comfortably with my old back and pelvis injuries 😃

That is so cool! I always ride my Tennessee Walker mare bareback and have been trying to do the swing up! I need to keep me knee tucked in more.
