How to Stop Standing Up in Your Golf Swing

If you are being told to stop standing up in golf downswing and you need an early extension fix, this golf lesson from Todd Kolb is just what you need!

Learn how to maintain hip hinge in the golf swing and keep good golf posture by creating an easy to repeat golf swing for seniors!

It’s gotta be one of the most frustrating tips your buddies give you.

“Stop standing up in your golf swing. That’s why you keep topping the golf ball.”

Are they right?

Yeah, probably.

But if it were that easy to stop standing up mid-swing, you would have fixed the problem by now.

A lot of golfers struggle to fix this bad habit simply because they don’t understand why it’s happening in the first place.

If you want it to stop, you’ve got to fix the issue that makes your body instinctively stand up.

In today’s golf lesson, you’ll learn why this keeps happening, and you’ll get a three-point checklist to make sure it never happens again.

Watch the video and finally stop topping the ball.

It’s incredible how fast we can fix our faults just by learning how to work with our bodies instead of fighting against them.

That’s why I created the Vertical Line Swing system.

Traditional instruction tells us we’ve got to make crazy demands of our bodies in order to play a great game.

A lot of deep twisting, raw power, tension, and restriction…

…things that might be possible for young professionals but don’t make a lot of sense for the rest of us.

My swing technique sets your body up for success.

It’s the only swing designed with the average golfer in mind.

And it’s the reason thousands of casual golfers are playing the best game of their lives, even in their retirement years.

What solved this issue for me: 1000s of swings with a chair behind me backside/butt touching, never lose contact with chair thru whole swing. Faster method: push chair away with left hip at impact. This definitely keeps you down on the ball. James from Palm Beach

From Bozeman, MT. Thanks, Todd, I really needed this video. I'm 71 and have only been playing for 6 years, so I try and improve my game each year. Love seeing the how-to videos. Please keep them coming!

Orlando, FL, age 73. Brilliant. I've been having problems with erratic hits, sometimes just thin, sometimes blading or topping. I've watched a LOT of YT videos about topping but never one that addresses the root cause for me. Thanks so much.

I love the simplicity of the VLS videos and its attentions to us weekend golfers. Not extra words, just great instruction! Can't wait for my driver to arrive while reading "the bad lie". I truly believe my golf game is going to fun again.

Hi Todd, G’Day from Australia, your tip re saying “Right then Left “ while swinging has immediately made a huge difference, I’ve gained about 20 yards in one day!! Also hovering the driver seems to work beautifully. Your instructions are clear and simple. Thank.

Hi Todd, great lesson. Rick Smith taught me about 30 years ago that to stay down and thru the swing, initiate the swing with left hip, swing thru with head cocked right (ear down ) and follow completely thru like you would skip a rock. From the rear view you finish with your upper body tilted right from the hip- - all good players finish this way. On your last swing that’s the way you finished ie., upper body tilted right arms high. Also allows your arms to extend, not chicken wing. This has worked for me for 30 years and I’ve never changed it and had a lot of success (club championships, etc) that way.

Todd, I believe Jack Nicklas turned his head with the left ear lower than the right ear to start his swing. Opposite from your head tip. Am I wrong? Thanks.

I would really love to see you playing let say a 9 holes and explaining at it goes on, how you manage the game (direction, club selection, how to hit different shots…). I am a fan of your videos an teaching and I think that it would be very helpful for us in the golf course… 👌

I've suffered from this my entire golfing life. This is the first time anyone has explained it this way. I'm going to take this to the driving range and hopefully fix this issue.

All your tips are easy to follow and translate to play on the course. I have had two spinal fusion surgeries and you have hekped me change my swing due to limited fexibility. Keep up the good work and could you please have some videos specif8cly aimed at those with limitied flexibility?

Ray Lyle 82 years old from South Africa - I was totally convinced that my weight was on my front foot. Then I asked my granddaughter, using her cell phone, to take a few pics of me striking the golf ball. HA all, and I mean all my weight, was on my back foot!!! With the help of the photographer my weight is now on my front foot and everything has improved. Many thanks!!!

At 3:13 or so, I put my cursor on the top of your head and pushed play before your swing. After your swing, my cursor is almost at your neck, so it's pretty clear to me that you're standing up. In slow motion, your head is at the same spot, almost, during setup as when you make contact with the ball, which is what you're trying to demonstrate, but you're definitely standing up after contact is made with the ball. All that said, thanks for all the great videos.

In all the golf videos I’ve watched on YouTube no one has ever described “standing up”. Yes they talked about topping the ball and lifting but not described as “standing up”. This instantly resonated with me and describes my problem. I will start on the fixes you described starting tomorrow. I knew about the feet flare but not the hip hinge. The Jack Nicklaus tip was given to me with the wrong eye, so when I’ve tried that I’ve been locking my head instead of freeing it up. 😂 thank you for a very good video. I am now subscribed and look forward to more. Alan from Bootle, North of Liverpool, Merseyside, UK
