How to Use OMNY: Using a Contactless Card

The MTA is rolling out a new contactless fare payment system – OMNY. With OMNY, you can use your own contactless card or smart device to make fare payments and enter the system. OMNY will eventually combine fare payments and mobile ticketing across subways, buses, and commuter rail. As we roll out OMNY between 2019 and 2023, you can still use MetroCard and eTix, giving you flexibility to choose when OMNY is right for you.

Hopefully when everything's rolled out, including smartcards, people will still be able to pay for their fares with cash, even if it means getting a disposable smartcard valid for, let's say a single ride lasting up to 2-4 hours, or for 24 hours. Perhaps you should get all the other operators in the area served by the LIRR and Metro-North, and possibly even NJ Transit to use the same card, and have an integrated fares system, like a German Verkehrsverbund.

MTA introduces a new fare system, but doesn't really give more detail on how it works going forward. What type of contactless prepaid card are we looking at here? Will there be a chipped type of card that is similar to what the NJ systems are using? The PATH system rolled out a chipped type card that allows riders to either choose refills on a pay per trip type basis or a monthly unlimited. It is a contactless card where you pay for whichever type of rides you want, tap the turnstile and go.
