Do Turbo Blankets Actually Spool Turbos Faster? Real Results Tested!

We all know that turbo blankets keep turbos hotter and engine bays cooler right. But do they actually make our turbos spool quicker and can we measure those results? We find out today on DirtGearTv do turbo blankets actually spool turbos faster? I did my own testing before and after installing a turbo blanket to see if my k03 turbo would spool faster after the turbo blanket was installed and the results might surprise you.

Best thing about the turbo blanket is it can't see you murdering clutches and axles and run away scared.

I had never heard about turbos spooling faster insulated. Great video dude.

One thing to consider is load has a huge impact on boost psi. If you compare a dirt data log to a tar data log the tires have more traction and will creat more boost due to higher engine load whereas in the dirt the power makes the wheels spin and doesn't load the tires as much. What gear are the datalogs taken from aswell because if you do a pull in 2nd gear your boost will be lower then if you do a 4th gear pull. Just some things to consider aswell. But I do believe the blanket will help spool a little fast as it's keeping the heat in and the gasses will flow faster and expand or stay expanded longer.

What an underrated video !
So informative and so much better than other channels...
thanks bro 💪🏽
God bless you.

Anyone who owns a 10th gen civic I got a $30 blanket from Amazon been working good for almost 3 years now no issues with it or my engine. I was skeptical about it but rolled the dice and won to even my own surprise

Be interesting to get a intake air temp b4 & after blanket. I suspect the turbo heating up the intercooler for every degrees deduction increase air density ( more oxygen) maybe a ram air duct blowing on the turbo hot side may reduce turbo temp every thing help when try to squeeze every once of power! Thanks for your time for sharing .

good idea and subaru - under bonnet heat is down 250 degrees = and keeping the exhaust hotter - yes faster spooling and will notice it on the street !

Another factor not as easy to datalog is power. Since less energy is being lost as heat, it needs less exhaust volume to power the turbine. That means less drive pressure - which almost always more power.

A turbo blanket is just a material used to cover the hotside of the turbo. In many applications, the added heat from not having anything to cover the exhaust turbine housing produces significant heat for the cold side and any components close by. Thus why many manufacturers use heat shields. More cost effective and still contains heat away from anything else. Now the blanket is designed above a heat shield in terms of it absorbing the EGT produced and dissipating it better. When you do this, you do increase in thermal efficiency which in turn can be used for more power.

Man that is great thanks for the knowledge 🤟

Ceramic coating the manifold and the turbine along with heat wrapping both makes a significant gain in spool and under hood temperatures. Both is better than one or the other. The wrap/blanket makes a bigger difference than the ceramic coatings, but the coatings are easier to do, look better, and last longer than the wrap/blankets.

The amount of work that can be done by a turbine is from the pressure drop from the inlet to the outlet. If you get higher temperature in, and keep the temp out the same, you will extract more work, because temperature and pressure are related, increase one and the pressure delta is higher, which means more work.

thank you for the test...
so turbo blankets improve performance..
how about parts longevity and durability? will there any particular parts that negatively affected?

Did you make sure to change the emissivity settings for the IR temp gun for the material you were measuring?

Will turbo blanket help even in dune buggy with turbo out in the open no engine compartment?

I can make this easy. Yes they absolutely work. There have been many studies done.

In a closed engine bay there are huge difference with or without a turbo blanket same as the difference between having a wrapped exhaust system and reflective shielding on your intake. As far as a turbo blanket making a Turbo spool faster I'm not entirely convinced on that one. I think it might play a factor because less energy is being lost from the closed system in the form of dissipating heat, but it also means it is containing heat and that can cause many other things that could also rob power. For example metal parts expanding more, and tolerances changing. Not discounting your findings it is just my worthless 2 cents. I do think the pros definitely outweigh the cons
