My mum always wanted to to learn this message, and i didn't get it until recently when her cancer has reached a point of no return. She said "you have nothing to be angry about. Haven't we spent an amazing time together? Haven't you made me proud? Stop making an enemy out of everything". I said "i have no enemies" and she exclaimed "YES!" not even knowing the context of when i meant.

What's crazy is the english version of this manga almost got cancelled a few years ago, due to low readership. I think we just hit this magic moment in history, where we're starting to reject the concept of "enemies." Something's changed in people and they are receptive to the message

i genuinely had my " villain arc" i few years back, i wasnt happy, i was never at peace, it only served to break down my relationships, and as a result i had to spend the last 2 years trying to mend back those broken relationships. because i was stubborn, stupid, and hardheaded, i didnt accept any help from others, dont get me wrong it worked for a while like 9 months almost a whole year, then somewhere along the road, i suddenly asked myself "if i continue to hate, continue to be angry, when will i be happy?" and it impacted my days, trying to figure out the answer to that question. then an opportunity came to answer that question, a christian fellow ship: ANCHOR, i didnt want to go, deeming it as a "waste of time". but going on that trip was genuinely life changing, i started to see life wasnt so bad, that just because one small hiccup occured it would serve to ruin my life, so i started to be "softer" gradually accepting the positivity in life. then the final phase of the fellowship, singing worship songs, initially i was trying to act tough to it, acting like i didnt care, and it was worthless (yes even though i started accepting positivity). until the song: STILL by hillsong rolled in, still is my favorite song ever since i was a child, my parents used to sing it to me to sleep, so it was completely unexpected, tears started flowing from my eyes as my heart warmed up, it was then that i realized there was someone who loved me and cared for me: GOD. so everything came together i decided to change, decided that i wouldnt want to be pitiful and angry at myself and start to forgive and mend.

Because peace and happiness will never come to me if i continued to hate, because I have no enemies.

Something that really amplifies this stoic philosophy within the story is that Vinland Saga's setting is a nasty, and terrible place where it's so easy to get caught up in revenge, and by societal pressures around you as we see through Thorfinn's experiences. When we see Thors, and eventually Thorfinn, gain the mindset of "having no enemies" it really gives the reader or watcher an idea that no matter how cruel the world can be you can always have the ability to stick to your values and be a great person. Everybody wants to be great, and be a better person yet it is difficult, when we see a person where their struggle was so painfully vast, yet they still manage to be a positive influence to the people around them, that inspires us. This is why Vinland Saga is so great, we see Thorfinn, the embodiment of pain, and societal pressure still sticking to the words of his father his essential core values, to turn the other cheek, to be someone who is a good for this world. The strength needed to do that is inspirational to many.

With the tail end of that quote: If you spend years getting back at your so called enemy, once you get your revenge, what do you have left? You still have your anger with no one to direct it toward except yourself.
