How to Do Basic Steps | Salsa Dancing

Hi, my name is Jorday Rivera and I am an expert in salsa. I own two dance studies in Queens, New York. We are going to be learning a progression of salsa moves, so that we could actually go out, practice, take it to the clubs, take it to a party, and you can show off all the great moves you learned. This is the basic step. And this is the breakdown to the basic step.

Now, we're going to start off with our right foot on one. So, we're going to start with our right foot on one, two, three. We're going to go back, five, six, seven. Forward, two three. Back, back, step. Forward, two three. Back, back, step. Forward, two three. Back, back, step.

And that was our basic step.

It is good to keep in mind that if you are teaching basic steps, it's best to orient your demonstration by co-ordinating with what the viewer is seeing. In other words, when you instruct to move forward with your right foot, that means that the teacher must move ahead with the left. This will help the beginner orient with his or her right foot, moving as they see you move (the opposite of what you are actually doing).

It's hard enough to learn new steps without having to think about direction -- just follow the direction the teacher facing you is doing. Otherwise, it's a motivating lesson, fun.

This is a bit strange, because I started taking salsa classes a few weeks ago, and the basic step we were taught was very different from what's been shown in this video. To be precise, we started with our left foot forward on 1, stepped in place with our right foot on 2, and brought the left foot together with the right on 3. We stepped back with the right foot on 5, in place with the left foot on 6, and brought the right foot back together with the left on 7.

What style am I currently dancing, and what style is being taught in these videos?

For those who are confused, they're doing it correctly. It's just a salsa basic on 2, instead of 1. They step with their right foot on 1 (as the break) so their first step in the actual basic is with the left foot on 2. I believe this is actually Mambo for that reason? Not sure tho

She is teaching New York style salsa, which counts on 2. The first step is a dummy one. Different from LA and several other styles, which (as other commenters have noted) begin with the left step forward for leads.

Thank you. Began a few months ago. Took forever to get the concept of skipping step four. Worst was which foot was to be step one. Practiced at home and have become pretty good, but nowhere near your level of course. Why take salsa or bachata? Great for coordination, cardio and socializing. Most importantly though is everyone is always smiling.

What I liked about this video versus other "learn to dance" videos was that you SHOWED the basic dance step right away, rather than talking so much about what you're about to do. I noticed that when instructors describe the steps they're about to make and what foot to use and this and that, I tend to get lost and focus too much on the mechanics instead of just dancing. The mechanics are ok to pay attention to once you get the feel of it and can then understand what you're doing. I prefer someone to SHOW me right away.

For those on the computer who are saying it was too fast, if you push the spacebar to pause you can push the . and, keys to move forward amd backward one frame at a time respectively. Alternatively you can slow this video down to 1/4 of its duration by going into the settings using the cog and and selecting .25 speed 🙌🙌

When I teach I explain that your right foot should be ahead of the left foot so that you are in a position that encourages you to go forward w/ the left foot. I don't ask the feet to be beside each other and then go forward with the left as step one. Rather, your left foot is slightly behind and your right foot is ahead of the left so that when you begin your 1st step is with the left foot ahead of your right. Make sense?
