The History of GDP Per Capita by Country (1960-2021)

The video shows the timelapse of world GDP from 1960 to 2021. Gross domestic product (GDP) is the standard measure of the value added created through the production of goods and services in a country during a certain period. As such, it also measures the income earned from that production, or the total amount spent on final goods and services (less imports). GDP per capita is gross domestic product divided by midyear population. GDP at purchaser's prices is the sum of gross value added by all resident producers in the economy plus any product taxes and minus any subsidies not included in the value of the products. It is calculated without making deductions for depreciation of fabricated assets or for depletion and degradation of natural resources. Data are in constant local currency.

Note: the data for the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia are estimates only since there is no reported data from these former nations.

It's hard to tell from this video, but in reality, Japan's per capita GDP hasn't changed much over the last three decades.

It's incredible how Argentina's growth slowed down, from being in the top 10 with the highest GDP Per Capita worldwide to having a GDP per capita similar to Mexico, it's sad how Argentina didn't keep growing and it stalled

Argentina pretty much remained stagnant for much of the 20th century. It's really bizarre how a country manages to remain in a vicious cycle of decline without any action to stem the loss and finally take off and grow. Such a shame that the country never reached its potential and destiny of becoming a world power. Other Latin American countries have now caught up and even surprassed it. Peru is right there, and Chile and Panama have even surpassed it.

In the 1990s, China was poorer than most African countries. The short span of more than 20 years has changed everything. In the next few years, it may reach 20000 GDP per capita

For the people who doesn't understand the difference between GDP x GDP per capita,
Total GDP = How rich a COUNTRY is.
GDP per capita = How rich the PEOPLE in a country are.

Example: Swiss people are richer than Chinese people. HOWEVER, China is richer than Switzerland.

One shows how well the money is distributed within a country and the other how much money a country can afford to spend. Different measurements for different purposes.

The fact that China’s growth made UN's GDP per capita grow faster is fascinating

I found an interesting fact that is sensitive to numbers. Note that India was 1/6 of the world average in 1960 and 1/6 of the world average in 2021. Sixty years later, India has stagnated. But China was also 1/6 of the world average in 1960, and now it is equivalent to the world average. The United States is now about 6 times that of China, that is, an average United States is equal to 36 India. It's terrible. If I were an Indian, I would find problems as soon as possible, learn skills and leave India for development.

No matter the country's boasting GDP, quality of living all comes down to per capita. That's what truly counts
