Playing the saxophone with the world's 'longest echo'

How the opening of Barry Cockcroft's Ku-Ku would sound in the Inchindown oil storage tank that holds the Guinness world record for the longest echo (longest reverberation time). The world record was set while researching for my book Sonic Wonderland / The Sound Book. If you want the impulse responses to play with, find the post on the The Sound Blog that gives a link to the freesound page.

That much reverb calls for a unique style of composition so that you use it and make sure it doesn't step on what you're playing next.

This is like the perfect study music, if there would be like an hour long playlist! I can't begin to tell you how awesome this was!

While this is fascinating that there are places like this, you can get these very type of sounds through ambience pedals for guitars. I have one and it is amazing. It is great to be able to get these sounds without having to go to places like this to get that sound.

This amount of reverb creates a whole new style of music

It would be interesting to compare this with what you'd get by actually playing the sax inside the room. I know it *should* be the same, but that's assuming that these convolution reverbs are really conceptually correct...

But wow, what a sound! :D

this is so beautiful
sounds like music you could hear in a game like homeworld or other space-exploring games

They used these methods to make stunning sci fi and fantasy soundtracks for movies in the past, its kind of sad this has been replaced with computer softwares

Saw this place on the fascinating Underground Britain t.v series. It holds the world record for the longest ever recorded echo, an astonishing 75 seconds.

damn i've never thought that i would want to get involved with convolving spaces, I've always thought that people would have convolved every space already, but I can't find an image of this tank nowhere

Hi, I found out about the existence of this site for his book. Thank you!

Will they hire it out for effect? Wasn't there silo in Canada that had a website attached and you could prompt sounds and hear what they were like in it? I'll have to put that in my max for live convolution reverb.

I heard the first seven notes and was SURE this was going to be the Deep Space Nine theme but I suppose this is pretty too ;)

Yeah. It was years ago when I tried the website for the silo. When I search now I only find someone's studio project on their farm. Very different silo.

I thought it sounded a lot like a synth. Very interesting. Wonder what drums would sound like.
