Megaliths and Giants of the Isle of Man | The Cloven Stones and King Orry's Grave | Megalithomania

“Mr Millburne informed us that about seven years since, he with two or three miners opened the mount to a depth of five feet and discovered a human skull and some thigh bones, which from their uncommon size, must have belonged to a person of gigantic stature.”

King Orry's Grave is in two parts, one behind a house and the other across the road and up the hill. Both are the remains of Neolithic tombs about 5,000 years old. For nearly two centuries a tradition has persisted that the two parts of King Orry's Grave were connected but clear evidence for this has been complicated by the construction of the road and houses that now lie between them.

Kind Orry is an almost legendary character revered by the Manx as their greatest king, often referred to as a giant. He was King Godred Crovan, who seized the throne in 1079 and created the Kingdom of Man and the Isles stretching from the Irish Sea to the Outer Hebrides. Several monuments are named in deference to him, but there is no connection between the historical figure and these prehistoric remains.

The Isle of Man was known in antiquity as Monapia, and later Manavia, named after the Belgic sea-faring tribe the Menapii, who lived in what today are the provinces of West- and East-Flanders. The city of Menen in W-Flanders near the French border is named after them, as are many places in coastal Britain and Ireland that have names like Mên, Man, Mon, and variations on the theme. Wexford used to be called Manapia, and Anglesey Mon. According to Caesar the Menapii were the smallest tribe of the Belgae. They are Celts, not Germani cis-Rhenani as a lot of the Belgae, they are named after the Celtic pagan deity Manannan, and they neighbour the more populous Morini (sea people) who lived in French-Flanders and the region still called La Morinie today, with Calais and Boulogne as main cities, and to which they were closely related. The most famous Menapian was Carausius, a 3rd century sea-farer who usurped the throne of Rome and declared himself emperor of Rome and when the real emperors denied him this, of Britain and Northern Gaul.

Thanks guys, I wasn't aware of ancient ruins on the Isle of Man, but it makes sense. Appreciate the efforts, as always.
