Yes! "Pioppini" are indeed italian mushrooms! They grow on old stumps of poplar - called "pioppo" in italian, hence the name: the -ini suffix means "small ones", therefore "pioppini" means "the small ones coming from poplar".
Good pronunciation, too! ❤

This reminds me alot of the weekly markets in Milano, Italy we visited while on vacation. As a German with a passion to cook regional and international specialities, I'm suuuuper jealous of these Italian markets. Our own markets in Germany can't compete with the sheer amount of fresh produce at Italian markets, even those in big locations or cities. So I can understand you wholeheartedly, Andy! Those markets are such big treasures and I miss them 😢

I feel you. I moved from Los Angeles to rural Tennessee. Small Asian markets are an hour away. Big Asian markets are 3 hrs away. So I have to grow my own Asian herbs and veg myself.

Thankfully, there is a decent Thai restaurant in my local small city but no Vietnamese, Korean, sushi, ramen, etc. I have to make all of that at home myself.

I do a once in a quarter run to the small Asian markets to get staples and snacks. Thankfully, you can buy a lot of stuff online too.

I was totally amazed with this market when I was there. Such high quality and variety and great people! One of the highlights of my month long trip.

Where I live you can drive past farms and a lot of them will have a small roadside stand where they sell the fresh produce. There is nothing like fresh corn that was picked literally minutes ago. The food markets are wonderful to go to - so full of ideas and inspiration.

I worked a high end produce stand here in NE Georgia for many years. I loved all the fresh seasonal garden goodies! Nothing too exotic but fresh and delicious all the same. You just can't beat market fresh fruits and veggies!

Honestly, one of the main reasons why I became a chef are these markets. I remember running around them as a kid in absolute awe of all the food I've never seen before and nudging my mum to buy as much as possible for me to try. Especially when we were on holiday, in France or Spain mostly, i couldn't wait to visit one.

Being an American, I can't say I've been to a big market like this before, but I do love farmers markets. I love deciding on the days meals and shopping for all the freshest ingredients at the markets. So delicious.

Lion’s mane is THE single best meat replacement hands down… marinate then drench and stick on a skewer.. tender and perfectly fibrous

My first born was pushed around that market every Sat morn for 3 years when we lived right next to that market. It’s still my fave. Lot of memories.

Cooked in garlic butter is my favorite way to eat mushrooms.
Sometimes, I'll add a touch of thyme.
