Car Suspension: Macpherson Strut Suspension (2021)

MacPherson Strut Suspension Explained: What is a MacPherson Strut Suspension? With car suspension animation in the video, the contents include

1) Basic Macpherson strut design: a single control arm connected to the bottom of the wheel hub, as well as a shock spring combination protruding from the top;

2) Working animation: as a suspension dampener and as a steering rod;

3) Advantage: The simplicity is its main advantage, which combines strength, spring and stability at a low manufacturing cost. It's also great for front wheel drive since the space it allows for the driveshaft;

4) Disadvantage: a lengthy vertical assembly, would run into problems If you need to lower your vehicle, thus not suitable for a race car or sports car. It has small camber changes with body roll. Because the strut is moving linearly, the wheel gains camber to a certain extent and after that will start to lose camber.

All my life I had people sit there and just tell me how things work.

Visuals/Videos like these really help focus in exactly what I need to know and take away the noise of everything else. Thanks!

Best animation I've seen for this type of thing. All the over videos I've seen look like they're from the 1990s! Well done!

Steering components are connected to the knuckle, not the hub. The hub is connected to the knuckle through the wheel bearing, allowing the hub to rotate with the wheel but be aligned firmly in place by the knuckle.

Possibly a stupid question but can someone please please tell me how the camber is maintained without an upper wishbone helping to hold the camber?
Seems to me that when the car corners, lateral forces would make the wheel want to lean over and break off.
e.g. The wheel on the outside of the turn would want to lean outwards in the direction of positive camber.
What is stopping the wheel and knuckle from ripping it's self away due to this force?

It can't be the "strut" that maintains the wheel's camber and takes all that force can it?

The only thing I can think of is that the drive shaft helps to hold onto the wheel and experiences a tensile load upon cornering...

I understand double wishbone but not single....

EDIT: I think I've figured it out after having another look at the steering knuckle and the key is HOW it connects to the bottom of the shock. The knuckle is offset slightly to the side of the bottom of the shock and has a large connection with two bolts. This extremely minor and simple detail completely changes the direction of the forces acting on the shock from the ones I thought were acting on it. The problem inside my brain is now solved ✅ 😁

That's why on bmw you need to run large amount of negative camber -4 or more, and stiffen up the front anti rollbar. All because of MacPherson disadvantages.

Illustration is not a MacPherson strut.
MacPherson strut is a simplified strut suspension that uses the anti-roll bar to locate the suspension fore and aft to carry the brake reaction forces.
As used by Ford England from around 1949.

Awesome info ℹ️. kindly reduce the music in next videos and please change the colour of the part when you talk about them

is the suspension on a hard side ? the ride feels bouncy and can feel the road and vibrations

I feel the Macpherson strut suspension provides a less quality ride Vs double wish bone with coil spring provides smooth ride

There is a problem in the animation. When the spring is compressed the wheel pops out. Needs to be fixed.

Very nice! Really needed a visual representation to undestand this. Thanks :)

It’s basically a half double wishbone suspension!!
