It's difficult to overstate just how fortunate we are that record labels of the past understood the significance of what black musicians were playing back then to document so much of it for future generations to learn from and enjoy. There was an interesting point in history when the artform was frowned upon because of where it came from.

Wow, what a great double bass lesson. I'm not a bassist but I'm learning something great about the Bebop language. Thanks.

These thought out guided practice sessions are saving my life! And it's exactly at the right level of engagement that my adhd brain does not want to wander away. Please keep doing them!

Paul Chambers is my most revered and studied jazz double bass player. Being a student of electric and just taking up the double bass a little over a year ago, I have gained a whole new appreciation for what he did with his instrument, in such a brief lifetime. This is definitely inspiring, as I embark upon my life-long journey to better bass playing.

I've been a "root" walking bass player for almost fifteen years. It surprises me to see how often it's left out entirely in these examples. I look forward to practicing with that in mind and improving the sound of my lines.

As bass player who’s been trapped in “start at the root” purgatory for way too long.... mastering this as a 2 feel first, before jumping into the walking bass line.... such a simple but really, really effective approach. Thank you!

That bass looks so awesome. I love all the scratches where he plucks the strings.

Hey Bob, I hope you check these comments after your stream has ended. I just wanted to express how grateful I am for these videos you commit your time to sharing with us. It is my favorite resource for improving as a bassist since practicing on my own, I often end up wandering somewhat aimlessly and spend a lot of time, not really improving. Your focused sessions really help me improve on concrete, useful techniques and provide a very implementable understanding of core aspects of playing the Bass. Having someone that knows what a real bassist should be for this genre, historically and can communicate it is invaluable. I often feel discouraged towards practicing because I feel that I'm not improving, until I find your videos and am inspired to pick up my bass and play along with your session, because you provide direction! And by the end, (after repeating some parts) I can hear tangible improvement in my ability to sit in as a jazz bassist that other musicians can enjoy playing with. So thank you more than words can say. I feel bad that your videos don't get the most views, as they should. This content is really helpful to any growing bassist that doesn't have the opportunity to take lessons with a master class bassist, as you are filling that gap out of the kindness of your heart and love for the instrument, which really carries through the video and makes me excited to be a part of it. So thanks again.
