Dahlia Growing Guide & The #1 Mistake Gardeners Make

Dahlias are so pretty, and I've really fallen in love with them over the past few seasons. I want to share some growing info so let's dive right into it!

This is the first time I've grown them up here at our seed production farm in Ramona. I was a bit nervous because it gets HOT up here. It will regularly get over 100 in this part of San Diego County, but these plants are thriving. Remember, they're native to Central America, so they can deal with this climate.

These were planted as tubers in the spring, and we were careful to not overwater them. We have mulched as well.

Because most gardeners in zones 9 and 10 won't see a frost (and many parts don't get a ton of rain), you can even leave the tubers in the ground all year long. They'll come right back the next year!

We went to the Getty museum and they had a lot of really nice Dalia’s. Now I need some in my garden.

We love dahlias here in Northern California. Zone 9b but they always bloom right after new years. At least for us
