I guess the <ni> in <onion> sounds kinda like <gn> in french, but really, <gn> is palatal. So instead of the tip of the tongue just behind the teeth as with <n>, the middle of the tongue is against the roof of the mouth. A Spanish speaker (and linguistics student) described it to me once, and she said that when pronouncing <ñ>, the tip of her tongue is actually against the back of her LOWER teeth.

Thanks for the lesson, Alexa! I do have one question. I hear a slight difference in the way you (and other French speakers I've heard) pronounce certain words with an "gn." For example, when you say "montagne, " it sounds more like mong-TANG-nee-ya rather than mong-TAN-nee -ya. In other words the second syllable seems to end with the consonant sound "NG" (as in "sing" in English) rather than in "N" (as in "sun" in English). Another example is from this sentence spoken by another French teacher: "Le terme 'Rastignac' designe quelqu'un de tellement ambitieux." When he said the verb "designe, " I heard it as de-ZING-nee-ya rather than de-ZIN-nee-ya. In contrast, you pronounced "mignon" as "mi-nee-yong" (rather than "miNG-nee-yong") and the other teacher pronounced "Rastignac" as "ras-ti-nee-yak" (not "ras-tiNG-nee-yak"). Am I just imagining this difference or am a hallucinating??? 🤣 J'ai besoin de vos lumieres ! (Sorry for the lack of accent marks.)

So it's like the nh in portuguese and the ñ in spanish (although in most brazilian accents the nh is weaker than the spanish ñ)
Thank you!

Hi Alexa! Why is it that the definite article of magnifique in the sample sentence is le? I thought it would be la... I'm so sorry, I'm confused. Kindly enlighten me. I really learn a lot from your videos, by the way. This is by far the best French language tutorial there is. And I'm recommending them to my friends who are as eager as me to learn French. :)
